"I get this mixed up, so amniotes split into 2 categories: Sauropsids ("Diapsids") and Synapsids." - yes, but don't conflate sauropsids with diapsids, not all were/are diapsid in presentation "The Synaptic lineage has survivors that eventually develop to today's crown mammals." - yes, but it's synapsid lineage, not synaptic, that's neuron related! "And so I'm guessing that today's crown reptile & bird groups are derivatives of the Diapsids, right? I'm just surprised how far back our common ancestor was (some 350mya roughly)." - yes & quite!

@spatrk6634 "amniotes diversified into synapsids and diapsids. synapsids eventually gave rise to mammals diapsids eventually gave rise to reptiles." No, you have the names mixed up (and I do think it's just a mix up rather than actually not knowing). 1. The initial amniote diversification was not synapsid/diapsid. It was synapsid/sauropsid. Diapsid is a later split within the sauropsid lineage. 2. Diapsids are reptiles, they didn't give rise to reptiles, nor were they they first reptile group You are using diapsid where sauropsid fits. I'll rewrite your comment correctly; "amniotes diversified into synapsids and sauropsids. synapsids eventually gave rise to mammals sauropsids eventually gave rise to reptiles."
