Russia cannot back out now so the only chance of stopping this is accepting the terms or fighting it out. Realistically Ukraine needs to be neutral or there will always be a problem. The regions that separated are gone. No point fighting the wars to keep that territory. Give Russia what they want but put in a clause that guarantees they withdraw. I know easier said than done. Also the Ukrainians need to get rid of the government that played the dangerous game that get them here. Understand their geopolitical reality and prosper within the limitations.

@unhippy1 and who will be that stupid to declare war on a nuclear power?
1
@unhippy1 nope. There are already some protected by NATO. They are smaller and easier to deal with through Belarus so NATO cannot use them as a staging ground. The situation with Ukraine is very different.

@unhippy1 no political promises mean anything, especially years after. Regimes change and objectives shift. A nuclear Ukraine would have been a disaster for them. They would probably be isolated and forced to give up the nuclear weapons anyway. The Stans are on the wrong side to matter much (at least at this time). I think Finland and Sweden will go to NATO and Russia will probably accept that. Russia has no viable claims there. That will start WWIII if Russia attacks them.

@unhippy1 while I don't agree with them I can understand the reaction. Lets say Russia decides to set up a base in Cuba again what do you think USA will do. Maybe they will want to start WW3 over that too.

@unhippy1 exactly any nation would react badly if they feel that threatened. Imagine a vote is taken to admit Ukraine into NATO and it succeeds what does Russia do then? This is a messed up situation. Not defending Russia here but Ukraine is not without blame. They kept pushing their luck poking the bear. Sooner or later it will react and badly too.

@unhippy1 agreed. The problem is how to de-escalate. Russia wont back down. The west can't pull away or they will be crucified by the public. What is the middle ground? Honestly Putin's demands are the most realistic. Leave the separated regions and Crimea. Ukraine stays neutral. But now that the war is started I am not sure Putin will stop till he removes all traces of pro western entities.

@unhippy1 I think there is definitely a chance of the nuclear warning you mentioned. Just today I was debating the splitting of the world. I agree with you. This will cause a new iron curtain but this time its not as simple. China will be on both sides. Manufacturing and trading with the west but also keeping good relations with Russia. They need to. Never know when another huawei incident will occur. China wont close doors so they have other avenues to trade when blocked by the west.

@marine463 very. There is no other sensible way out. Ukraine cannot keep pushing to NATO. They must understand their reality and play neutral.
