The canopy enclosure could not be fully opened upside down and the plane did not have emergency canopy release mechanisms or escape mechanisms. Eddie did not wear a helmet or fire-resistant clothing. The fire engulfed the fuselage and cockpit within 1.5 minutes and Eddie was found laying against the cockpit canopy and likely died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.
