@justindyches5510 I'm liking the YT comment that some fighter jock will have to paint a pretty balloon on his airplane for the kill. They'll have a new callsign- "Party Pooper."

+ Gary devones It drifted over Alaskan and Canadian air space for days. It isn't something that would have gone unnoticed by civilian and military radar.

+ @shrekogre1010 Video showed a missile from an aircraft. Expensive hardware to use just for a balloon, but hard to get an aircraft into gun range at 70,000 feet.

+ @M G I think they were just trying to pirate Western TV. Looking for reruns of Dallas.

+ @whatfreedom7 The Chinese have over 250 sophisticated and reliable satellites that can do more daily surveillance than one balloon randomly drifting in the jet stream. It also drifted all the way across Canada and they didn't bother with it. The USN will fish it out of the ocean and everyone can get a look to see what it was.

+ Justin Dyches It was shot down just off of the coast where the US Navy can use their salvage teams, and this is an easy job compared to recovering a lost aircraft.

@justindyches5510 China has enough satellites (over 250) to get surveillance every few hours. A balloon for that doesn't add up but possible I suppose. Shooting it down in Montana? That's sacred-cow land just like Wyoming in the Close Encounters movie - it would just piss off the ranchers.

+ @That guy Looking at the tracking, it wasn't over US waters until it reached Alaska. It drifted all the way across Canada and they were not concerned to do anything about it. China, Russia and the US have very good satellites, so the spy balloon idea doesn't fully compute. It will be fished out of the ocean and the story will come later.

+ @Matt JaxDad The balloon was at 70,000 feet in sub-zero temps. That's the equivalent of sneezing and hoping someone 13 miles away might catch your cold. Covid was far more successful just spreading through airline travel.
