Here are the actual facts: Keir Starmer served as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) from 2008 to 2013. During his tenure, in 2009, the CPS decided not to prosecute Jimmy Savile due to “insufficient evidence.” This decision was made by a reviewing lawyer within the CPS and local police; there is no evidence that Starmer was personally involved in this decision.  In 2012, following widespread revelations about Savile’s extensive history of sexual abuse, Starmer commissioned an investigation into the CPS’s earlier handling of the allegations. The resulting report, prepared by Alison Levitt QC, criticized both prosecutors and police for their “unjustifiably cautious” approach and concluded that prosecutions could have been possible in relation to three of the claims if a different approach had been taken. Starmer publicly apologized for the CPS’s shortcomings in the case.  In summary, while Starmer was the head of the CPS at the time of the decision not to prosecute Savile, he was not directly involved in that decision. He later took steps to review and address the failures in the handling of the case.
