  1. People need to feel productive. A man needs to feel he is pulling his own weight. Otherwise he feels useless. This destroys self-esteem. And without self-esteem, there is no ambition, reduced productivity in society. More poverty. I knew this without ever seeing this study. UBI would cause more people to chose not to work. In this way, it would hurt them.

But because the cotton gin required labor to produce, there were jobs created elsewhere. And because the use of the cotton gin reduced the cost of cotton, more cotton products were purchased, and this increased employment. The total jobs created by the cotton gin exceeded the jobs cost in the fields. This same increase in employment has followed every major technological innovation. The technological change create dislocation, and this can be painful. But workers who are willing to be re-trained for new jobs made out well. Leather buggy whip workers started making leather seats for cars. So, why do you think AI will be different?
