Russia cannot fight the long-term battle/war. Ukraine is. The Ukraine can slowly grind down Russian strength. While it also grinds down Ukraine's, the Ukraine has the moral and the defensive advantage to maintain their strength longer than Russia.

@lastsong7159 I think you are conflating your terms. The saying is "best defense is a good offense". What I think you are trying to say is General James Longstreet advocated: "strategic offense, TACTICAL defense". He very much agreed with you that you pick the location to fight and prepare a strong defensive position then lure the enemy to that strongpoint and force them to shatter themselves against it.

@misterpinkandyellow74 How? Give details. The Ukraine is FULLY mobilized and on a war footing. Russia is not, pretending to not be and horribly understaffed because of that false pretense. The Russians are not fighting for their homes and livelihoods the way the Ukrainians are. The Ukrainians have much more at risk than Russia soldiers do. The Ukraine also has the supply lines that Russia does not. Those factors favor the Ukraine in the long game. Keep in mind, the Third Reich overran and occupied all of the Ukraine in just four months during Operation Barbarossa. They held it for just two years before the Soviets completely ejected them. The Ukrainians will do the same to the Russians. In three years' time, I predict that the Ukraine will have taken back the Crimea and will be marching on Minsk to liberate Belarus from Putin.

@hnorrstrom Perhaps, but not always. How many times has the US chose to fight to a draw rather than an outright win since the end of WW2? How many engagements have been waged where American forces curb-stomped their enemy yet chose to relinquish the battlefield?
