Indeed. And since Canada and Norway have been sending winter gear since August, that puts them in a good position to exploit the cold.

@snidecommenter7117 The fact that they started sending it in August tells you that they were planning ahead. Mad props.
4
And that is pretty much how Ukraine has dealt with Russian positions: out flank them with superior mobility. Guderian would be proud.
4
@timothygibney159 SOVIETS, not Russians. Soviet forces included Belarusians and Ukrainians. Canada and Norway have been sending winter gear to Ukraine since August in preparation for the Winter offensive. Indications are that Russian troops don't have ANY winter gear. How do you think that is going to play out? So far Marshall Mud has not hamstrung Ukraine. If that is any indication, it means General Frost will be assisting in a VERY Red Christmas (aka a butt-kicking Christmas).
3
Russia has proven that they CANNOT cross rivers. Ukraine has shown tremendous skill in amphibious operations, particularly in crossing rivers often in places where the Russians failed. Just because the Russians have their back against a river doesn't mean that the same problems apply to Ukraine. Don't forget, the Ukrainians successfully evacuated Sevrodonetsk despite having their back against a river.
3
And how are they going to do that without proper equipment? They didn't have enough fuel to storm Kiev, what makes such an ambitious plan work now?
3
Marshall Mud has not slowed down the Ukrainians, so if that is any indication, shows General Frost may favor Ukraine. And since the Canadians and Norwegians have been sending winter gear since August, that puts Ukraine in a VERY good position as contrasted with Russia and its lack of proper gear.
2
It is quite amazing how the Ukrainians have developed into a professional Western Military while the Russians have degenerated into barbarism and brutality. All pretense of professionalism out the window.
2
Stopped to regroup. Unlike the Russians, Ukrainian forces do NOT want to outrun their supply lines.
2
Apparently, you are not familiar with how horrible life in the Soviet Republic of Ukraine before 1990. You also don't seem to remember the defiant defense of Kiev at the start of the war. You grossly underestimate the determination of Ukraine. Your comment comes from the point of view of a pampered westerner.
2
Agreed. The Soviet Red Army made its greatest gains against the Wehrmacht during the winter months. I suspect Ukraine will also enjoy that favor from General Frost.
2
Sounds like a typical winter in Soviet Ukraine before the 90s. And you think that will break their morale?
2
General Frost favored the Soviet Red Army against the Wehrmacht, but I suspect he will favor Ukraine over Russia. Especially as Canada and Norway have been sending cold weather gear since August.
2
I don't know, they did pretty well for themselves during the first two months when nobody in the West believed they had a chance. One thing this war has taught is that you should never underestimate Ukraine.
2
"Fixed fortifications are monuments to the stupidity of man, "-George S. Patton.
2
The Russians don't have the proper gear for a summer/fall campaign, what makes you think they are properly equipped for winter combat?
1
After ejecting the Russians from both Crimea and the Donbas, they should consider marching on Minsk. With the Belarusian partisans who fought alongside them taking the point, of course.
1
Training, yes. NATO special forces actively participation, not so much. Make no mistake, this is a Soviet-Ukrainian miliary fighting a Soviet-Russian military. Only, the Soviet-Ukraine military is being augmented with NATO technology and tactics. But the grand strategy is still very much Soviet doctrine.
1
@GolfNut867 How many proxy wars were fought from 1950-1990 that did NOT escalate into nuclear war? If anything, proxy wars PREVENT nuclear arms exchange. Get your head out of your rear and actually crack open a history book on 20th century warfare.
1
Canada and Norway have been sending winter gear since August. That puts Ukraine in a good position to exploit the cold, unlike the Russians who don't have proper gear for even summer/fall.
1
Yeah, but they ignore details about winter fighting in Ukraine during WW2. Winter does not stop combat on the plains of Ukraine.
1
If Belarus wouldn't join in the fight at the start, they wouldn't be able to do a damn thing now. For one, Russia has been stripping Belarus of its supplies for months now.
1
@dave.p153 Yeah, funny how ALL of those school shootings occur in gun free zones. And in BLUE STATES with the strictest gun laws. You don't see school shootings in red states where the gun laws are less restrictive. A disarmed population is easy to massacre. An armed population can never be subjugated.
1
Oh, I have no doubt that China desires "Outer Manchuria". The bigger question becomes Sakhalin Island.
1
Don't forget that the Soviet Red Army made its biggest gains against the Wehrmacht during the winter months. I can easily see Ukraine doing the same, especially when you consider that Canada and Norway have been sending cold weather gear since August.
1
Indeed. It is as if they forgot that the Soviet Red Army made its greatest advances against the Wehrmacht during the winter. With all of the cold weather gear Canada and Norway have sent, I see Ukraine doing the same.
1
Yeah, but I think he is underestimating the potential for a winter campaign. Canada and Norway have been sending winter gear since August, so that means Ukraine will be in a good position to capitalize on the cold weather.
1
Indeed. Cut down to Melitopol to sever the land bridge and divide Russian forces.
1
The Soviet Red Army made its greatest gains against the Wehrmacht in winter. I could see Ukraine doing the same, especially as Canada and Norway have been sending cold weather gear since August.
1
@Bradimoose Yeah, but then that would mean they are weak enough for the Ukrainians to break through their lines. It is a balancing act where you don't cluster you guys, but then you do want to spread them out too thin either.
1
Indeed. General Frost may actually favor Ukraine this winter with an ass kicking Christmas. It won't end by Christmas as the battle for Crimea will take at least an entire season, but with the winter gear that Canada and Norway have been sending since August, they will be in a good position to exploit the cold.
