American presence in the Indian Ocean Basin is much smaller than it is in the Pacific or Atlantic Basins. India is not the strategic threat that China is. In this, the US and India are natural if unlikely allies.

In lexicon, calling an area someone's backyard has less to do with exerting regional power and more to do with acknowledging the geographic location as being very close to them.

And yes, Arizona, Texas, and California ARE in Mexico's backyard. As is Belize and Guatemala. But you can't accept that can you? You are engaging in Anti-Colonialist rhetoric, rooted in Cultural Marxism of "oppressor vs. oppressed". Nobody is being oppressed when a region is accurately being called "backyard".
