Isn't that what George S. Patton said to do? "Rehabilitate the Germans to fight the Soviets"?

Not going to be the same this time. More likely, it will be Poland who is more militarized than Germany.

Exactly. They are like spoiled children, complaining about the big scary Daddy keeping the wolves at bay.

The devil is always in the details. Part of the problem is that the organization who loses the contract bidding can and does sue the government and it is the major reason for the cost overruns and logistical backups.

There is very little that the Kriegsman has to be ashamed of. Indeed, submariners like Gunther Prien (Bull of Scapa Flow) conducted themselves with immense compassion and restraint during the war, often rendering survival aid to the crews of the ships he sent to the bottom of the Atlantic. Indeed, Even the Wehrmacht itself acted with great restraint and honor as contrasted with the PARAMILITARY Schutzstaffel (SS). And before anyone goes on about "Wehrmacht war crimes" might I remind them that outside of the Field Marshalls of the OKW, NONE of the rank-and-file members face the Nuremberg Trials that the SS, Doctors, and Lawyers all faced.

Because Angela Merkel was a communist collaborator. In the 1980s she was a member of the East German Communist Youth League. So, it is no surprise that when she got into office, her first order of business was to prostitute Germany to Putin and Russia.

Indeed. They need to re-embrace the Imperial Germany Kaiser-Prussian heritage and return to SOME of the better elements of Hindenburg's era, but WITHOUT the rampant antisemitism and jack-booted fascism.

@beng7654 Indeed. Not many realize that Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank was a decorated officer in the Kaiser's Army and had endeared himself to the men who served under him. That made for something of an awkward situation for the Gestapo and SS who arrested him. As easy as it was for the Nazis to scapegoat Jews for the WW1 defeat, those who served with them knew the truth and could not be so easily fooled by the pogroms and libels.

@beng7654 I can trace my lineage to King Asa of Judea through my Pennsylvania Deutch Ancestors, the Schettles (anglicized to Shuttles). BUT I do NOT claim to be Jewish in any way. They fell away from the faith generations ago and so my family no longer has any right to claim to be a Jew. I bring this up because I am reminded of the promise given to Father Abraham that "through you a blessing to all the nations and families of the world". The Jewish people of Imperial Germany WERE a blessing on that nation, one that the leadership of the Weimar Republic chose to forsake. Men like your grandfather and Otto Frank who were loyal, patriotic Germans who happened to be Jewish. It is THEIR example to which I choose to honor Kaiser-Recht Germany.

I tend to agree. The former Warsaw Pact has shown to have more of a spine than the traditional members of NATO. And I am actually all for Poland becoming the new 800-pound gorilla in Europe keeping the peace.

@difficiliscarere9838 The only people really surprised by Russia's invasion were the people who thought that Putin was just a swell guy that you could buy gas from. Most folks who advocated for a strong European defense (namely Poland and the Baltic States) were not at all surprised. That is in fact WHY they joined NATO in the first place!
1
I second that recommendation.
1
@thefool1086 Why? That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence (Hitchens's razor).
1
@Delgen1951 That is a red herring and you know it. American blood and treasure have NOTHING to do with the incompetence and corrupt system of procurement regarding the Bundeswehr.
1
That is a false canard. The US has been all volunteer since the end of the Vietnam War and the end of the draft. An all-volunteer force IS possible, but it requires a cultural change. The bigger point for South Korea has to do with making sure their male population is capable of taking up arms should the North march across the DMZ. German hasn't had the Sword of Damocles over their head that South Korea has.
1
@rockyoh Finances do NOT equate to personnel issues regarding volunteer verses non-volunteer. That is yet another red herring. The transition from compulsory military service to all volunteer is not an issue of finances unless you are purposely ripping off your young population by using them as a cheap labour pool below market value in the military. And Germany clearly doesn't have that problem as the military pay clearly shows, though Russia certainly does.

Germany today is not the Germany of even 30 years ago. Time to put the past in the past.
1
@kerstas10 So did the Ukrainians.....until the Germans started slaughtering them alongside the Russians. When it became clear that Stalin's Red Army was going to be unstoppable, they quickly changed back to the Soviets (begrudgingly).
1
@tavish4699 No, Russia was NOT the best option. You complain about American liquified gas so you would rather put a Russian leash around your neck? There ARE other options, you just refuse to consider them. How about the energy deposits under the Netherlands that were shut down? How about those oil deposits in Norway? Your problem is that you lack the creativity to think outside the box, instead following what the feudal elites in Europe tell you.
1
@M W Nice Anglophobia there. You do realize that the former Warsaw Pact VOLUTARILY joined NATO? Hell, when DeGaulle pulled out of NATO, American troops left France. Not that you would bother to actually know that dirty little detail. Your whole argument is based on a hysterical hatred of English culture.

@bastisonnenkind The problem with Democracy is that it is a hydra whose heads are trying to kill and devour each other. There is a reason why even Aristotle held it in certain contempt. As for Angel Merkel, she knew exactly what she was doing by prostrating Germany before Putin and making her country almost entirely dependent on Russia. She was an active and enthusiastic member of the East German Communist Youth during the 1980s, so it is hard to claim her actions were not by design.
1
Naw, what they need is another Hindenburg. Prussian-Kaiser Imperial leadership, not the National Socialist kind.
