  4. Could have been far worse. Krakatau has a nasty habit of killing thousands with its tsunamis. Tonga is fortunate that they did NOT get something that deadly.

  5. This was an andesite rather than basaltic lava. You are thinking of basaltic lava flowing. Strato volcanos rarely have that kind of lava. Typically, they have the dome building lava like Mount St. Helens, Mount Unzen, La Soufriere (Monserrat), or Vesuvius.
