@grey momo How familiar are you with the 35 year occupation of Korea by Japan from 1910 to 1945? The Imperial Army rapes pillaged and plunder the country. Have you heard of the Rape of Nanking? Now imagine that going on in Korea every year. Old grudges die hard in East Asia. I am glad that DESPITE the historic animosity, there were some Koreans who looked past that and rallied around this girl. It shows that some folks can forgive past wrongs and move forward.

There is very little love lost between the Japanese and Koreans. Remember the 2013 earthquake? There were many Koreans cheering about that. When the South Korean government offered to send search and rescue K-9s, the blowback from the Korean population caused them to rescind the offer. Why the anger? 35 years of brutal occupation is hard for them to forget. Their grandparents remind them of the horrors they lived through.

@zbigbozbboy5245 Now you are being disingenuous. While the Dutch first arrived in that part of the world in 1603, their aggressive colonization didn't really become significant until about 1700. One notable conquest was of the Lanfang Republic in Borneo. And that was a private company crushing them, not the government of the Netherlands. The did not become an official part of the country until the company was nationalized in 1800. It was at that point, it became direct sovereign subjects of the Dutch. Now contrast that with the Japanese who destroyed Korean history such as the demolishing of the Gwanghwamun Gate. The Japanese tried to systematically replace Korean culture with Japanese. The Dutch were never that aggressive in pushing their culture on the locals.

I agree. It is good to see that some Koreans are willing to bury the hatreds and wrongs of the past and treat people on their own merits and with dignity.

@Nitro1000 If you think that was punishment, you have lost the context. How familiar are you with Japanese Defense Plan Ketsu-Go? How about the American Invasion Plan Downfall consisting of Olympic (Invasion of Kyushu) and Coronet (Honshu and the Kanto Plain)? Kokura was suppose to be the target of the second bomb and WOULD have been the third target had not Emperor Hirohito finally ordered his men to stand down. Even then, there were elements of the military who tried to stage a military coup d'état and dethrone the emperor to continue the war.

@lazmanariffsulaiman7569 What? Holding grudges? As I recall, the Singaporeans and Hong Kongers tend to remember their time as British subjects quite fondly. And American pilots fought alongside the Chinese as part of the Flying Tigers unit. If there is any grudge to be held it should be against the French who managed to foul up most of their holdings around the world.

@ehmjay2892 Wow, seriously? You didn't read my post did you? Yes, I mislabel the Tohoku Earthquake as 2013 rather than 2011 when it did occur. I was at Osan AB in Korea when that happened. I saw the reactions of the Koreans. While those under 30 were sympathetic, those over 30 were still very bitter towards Japan and cheered. And apparently you overlooked my point about the aid the Park Geun-Hye offered to send which caused outrage in Korea.

@grey momo If you think I was justifying it, you were not actually reading my post. I was providing context, something you are oblivious to. And if you truly knew your history, you would be aware of said context. Japan has done little to address the War Crimes of the Military Leadership under Tojo. It is actually a credit to the Koreans and Chinese who chose to forgive and move on rather than perpetuate the cycle of recrimination. For that I am pleased to hear that many South Koreans called out their own countryman for his actions.

@grey momo Speak for yourself. You seem to downplay and trivialize inconvenient parts and embellish the ones that fit your narrative. In the clash between the Japanese and Koreans I don't have a dog in the fight beyond wanting them to come together against a greater threat from Red China and their puppet in DPRK.

@grey momo I will repeat from a Facebook post because it needs to be repeated here. The American chauvinism is well earned. Who liberated the European continent not once but TWICE? Who made all of the technological advancements of the 20th and 21st centuries? Not Europe. Only Israel and the Asian Tigers(South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore) can match the US for technological innovation. All others simply plagiarize. World War 2 was a direct result of how badly Europe concluded WW1. And World War 1 was because a bonehead monarch got himself assassinated in Sarajevo, a city he had no business visiting. And the US had to save Europe both times because that continent can't keep its house in order without outside intervention. As for POST WW2, if it was not for American GIs holding the line in West Germany, most of Europe would be speaking Russian today. France can't defend anything; not Paris, not Dien Bien Phu Falls, NOTHING. The last time the Brits fought a War on their own was over the Falkland Islands. So again, how am I misconstruing history? As Bill Mahar said, you guys were the ones asleep during history class. You may hate and despise the US and Americans, but that hate is born from envy, jealous, and a little bit of an inferiority complex. You want to be top dog, but only under the US's hegemony has the world experienced true peace. Without the US, the world would be a FAR more violent and chaotic place.

@grey momo It is only megalomania if it is delusional. American might and the fact that we save the world from itself justifies American arrogance. It is you who harbors psychotic fantasies. Admiral Yamamoto, General Kuribayashi, Colonel Baron Takeichi Nishi, and many others who served with Americans in WW1 came to understand and appreciate Americans and our fighting spirit. They knew first hand that war with the US was a fool's errand that would only bring destruction on the Japanese Empire. I find it disappointing you, much like Togo and his cadre, refuse to learn the lessons they learned.

@grey momo Mock me all you want. When your arse finds itself in trouble, you will be begging my country to save you and yours. We go above and beyond. Just ask the Koreans; ours was the only army that came to town and did NOT enslave them and force them to adopt our culture. Instead, we came in, did what was needed, then (mostly) went hope. THAT is why you find that Koreans have more affection for the US than many other countries. It also explains why most of the Vietnamese Boat people came to the US rather than remain in southeast Asia.

@elcidgranada3549 Actually, much IS known. The Samguk Sagi records the three Kingdoms period which predates the Mongolian occupation by a good 600 years. The native royalty Goreyo Dynasty was allowed to continue on the conditions that they not only pay tribute to the Khans, but that the sitting King had to marry a daughter of the Khans. That is part of why Admiral Yi Seong-gye's rebellion which lead to the foundation of the Choseon Dynasty was both popular and successful. After all of those years, the Goreyo royal family was more ethnically Mongolian than Korean.

Rogin 1911 Japan dispense with any pretense and brutally occupied the country for 35 torturous years. Don't pretend that the first 10 years of the 20th century was all smiles and unicorns. The Koreans were very much oppressed.
