Kind of Sounds like Japan in the 80s before their lost decade. At one time, the land on which the Imperial Palace was on was worth more than the property value of the entire state of California.

Because they keep stalling for time. It is like a person at a restaurant who has forgotten his credit card, so he keeps ordering more food to avoid having the bill brought out. Sooner or later, the restaurant is going to close.

No joke. The Chinese seem to be following what the Japanese did in the 1980s leading up to their "lost decade". The ONLY reason why they have avoided the bubble popping is because they have not stopped their spending spree. The analogy I have seen is someone at a restaurant who forgot their card. So rather than admit to it when the bill comes due, they simply keep ordering more from the menu. Eventually the restaurant is going to close(even if it is nominally 24/7; there is a period to close the dining room for cleaning).

They need a war to kill off their surplus of men to prevent that civil unrest. And they may get it with the Spratly Islands as well as unifying Taiwan with the mainland.

Tropical Breeze2000 First off, the US and Canada have not existed for a millennia(1,000 years). The US has only been around for 245 years. Canada for just 154 years. So just on that along you have no idea what you are talking about. Economic cycles occur over the course of a single decade, not thousands of years.

@defaultlogos2976 It is because Westerners, and Americans in particular have a very short perception of history. Japan has 5,000 of history, Korea 6,000 and China all the way back to the Mesolithic (12,000 years). Contrast that with Europe where the Romans were the civilizing force and before them to a lesser extent, the Greeks.

It isn't about size, it is about replacement value. 4.5 babies per woman in Bangladesh where space is a premium is NOT sustainable. China's population "growth" is 1.7 officially and more like 1.2 which is NEGATIVE growth. That is also not sustainable. Ironically, India is walking a path closer to where the US was in the 1970s as far as population balance.

@cashmoney2159 Not entirely true. That may have been the case in the 1960s and 1970s but since the 1980s Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand have experienced a better quality of life on par with the US making a green card irrelevant as a factor.

@mr.m2659 I know that the Chinese, like most Asians a great at putting on a smiling face while secretly in their minds they are wishing daggers in your back. There is a certain nuance in the eastern mentality that you do NOT complain about a bad situation. Unlike people in the west, they keep most of their grievances to themselves. As to my original point, the media in the west are obsessed about InCels, but that is with a population that is nominally more women than men. What do you think is going on when the men out number the women? Do you really believe they are NOT frustrated young men unable to get some? There is a very good reason why non-Chinese women are trafficked INTO Red China from places like North Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, and elsewhere. In short, try digging deeper rather than take things at face value. What you see on the surface is glitz and lacquer. The Chinese have a word describing gold on the outside, but rot and decay on the inside.

@mr.m2659 Dude, I know that Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Fillipeno, and Hmong are all different groups. But they do share commonalities much like how Latin countries (France, Spain, Italy, etc), Germanic Countries (Deutchland, Austria, England, Denmark, etc), and Scandinavian countries all share similar values. In the case of the East, they all share Buddhism and Confucianism as common influencers on values. Taoism has lesser influence on Japan but Taoist influence is seen on China's neighbors Korea and Vietnam. Fajia, or Chinese Legalism also has a major but more subtle impact on Eastern culture. Your problem is that you are trying to highlight differences that actually have very little bearing on the issue. Your problem is that you are using appeal to experience as if somehow only those who have been to mainland China have the only valid arguments. That is a logical fallacy and only proves you cannot debate the merits. I have made valid points you cannot refute and so you seek to attack the messenger to discredit the message.

Seriously, you are ignorant of recent Chinese history. And your second comment only proves that you are closeminded and unwilling to even consider anything that does not confirm your own biases.

But then again, people like you who throw around the terms "Yank" and "Yankee" fail to realize your perceived insults are a badge of honor we wear with pride. Oh, and I have spent several years in East Asia, thank you very much. My wife happens to be Chinese. It is a shame you let your chauvinism blind you to the perspectives of others; you are often guilty of the very same sins you accuse Americans.

Sc0ut Op China is a VERY patriarchal society. The men are expected to take care of their parents; the girls are expected to take care of her husband's parents not her own. You demand people accept the girls? How about you learn about the culture and what makes them tick. Stop judging other societies by Western standards and values.

@HydratedBeans My wife is Chinese Indonesian. My two sons are bi-racial white-Hakka Chinese. I served two years overseas in Asian and had an absolute blast. Unlike most "little America" people, I didn't stay cloistered in a cosmopolitan ghetto and instead went out into the countryside. No, I just actually happen to understand Eastern culture and their values. A Western-centric person like you doesn't even bother to learn about other cultures and consider what it is that makes them see the world from a different perspective.

@HydratedBeans Being married to someone is NOT the same as simply have a friend from that race/culture/ethnicity. Seriously, how can one be married into a culture they hate? How can one have mixed-race children with a person they are bigoted against? Or is that why you removed your comment? Because after posting it in an emotional outburst, you realized that it lacks any coherence? Cries of "racist!" and "bigoty!" have lost their meaning. At this point any wokescold who makes the accusation is just showing that they have lost the debate and cannot argue rationally. Ever heard of the story of "They Boy who Cried Wolf"? Yeah, that is you now. You know what is the biggest problem with your accusation of racism? It lacks long-term perspective. The reason why mixed-race marriages were unlawful in many cultures had to do with property inheritance. Especially in Antebellum Southern US, the power mongers didn't want the colored children of white fathers to become land owners and become part of the landed gentry. They did NOT want the situation that developed in French Creole New Orleans or former Spanish colonies where the mixed races population eventually came to hold most of the power and much of the wealth. Someone like me with mixed-race children has made a conscious choice to have the family legacy becoming less white and more mixed heritage.

Part one was very interesting. It would be nice to contrast China's boom with Japan's boom in the 1970-80s before their "lost decade", especially as the Japanese went through something of a real estate glut much like China. A video showing where the two countries differed in their approaches would be greatly appreciated.

Gordon Chang is looking at the example of Japan leading up to their Lost Decade". Now consider how much larger China is and you start to understand how it is taking longer for China's looming debt crisis to catch up. An analogy is someone at a restaurant who forgot his credit card. He keeps ordering more food to prevent the bill from being brought out. China is effectively doing the same thing.

@LesliePeter Did you not watch the video? They addressed that. The Chinese middle class are NOT the consumers that Americans are. Despite what Joseph Stalin said, quantity is NOT a quality of its own. Bulk may be great for efficiency, but it is a terrible way to turn a profit.
