My father served about the USS Ingersoll's sister ship, the USS Elliot (DD-967) and had a similar story. In that situation, the people on the boat intentionally set it on fire so as to prompt an S.O.S. rescue. After being rescued, they were given a hot meal from the galley, and were allowed to use the showers. While they bathed, the crew washed their clothes. As usually happens, money always falls out in the wash. After the meal, the boat people were asked whose wanted to claim the money found in the wash. Not a single person came forward; they knew if they claimed it, they would be sent back. Years later, my father was commissioning a Vietnamese-American into the Navy. Turns out the newly minted Ensign's wife was one of the people my father's ship rescued.

You realize that Vietnamese are among the most reliably Republican votes in the country? More so even than Evangelical Christians. They remember the horrors of Communist Vietnam all too well.

"We destroyed"? I guess "re-education camps" and gulags don't mean anything to you do they? Ask yourself why so many Vietnamese even today are coming to the US. How about what Pol Pot did in Cambodia under the Khymer Rouge? More Vietnamese have died at the hands of their fellow Vietnamese than ever died by the actions of America.
6
False analogy. People coming up from Mexico are not fleeing from Communist Gulags. Mexico is NOT Vietnam.

@peterfranks6243 "Just like every other" Seriously? Which country takes in the most refugees and asylum seekers? We have what every other nation in the world desires and envies. If you think America is so bad, I invite you to move to DPRK (North Korea). That will sober you up fast.

@epramos6800 You don't know a single Trump voter. You say they want you vote but hate your skin tone? That is liberal-progressive Democrats you just described. Your bling hate of "Orange Man Bad" has made you easily manipulated by those who would exploit you for their own personal gain.
2
@HKim0072 Recheck your numbers. The US is still taking in refugees fleeing from authoritarian regimes. The "refugees" you speak of are nothing more than economic migrants. Mexico is NOT communist North Korea. The two are completely different situations.
2
Ye of little faith. You assume she speaks of the Christian God, but she could have easily been praising a deity of an Eastern faith. Your problem is that you hold in contempt that which has sustained people through trials and tribulations that people without faith would never have survived.
2
Indeed. Look at refugee acceptance, and the US is still far and away more open to taking in people fleeing than any other nation in the world. Always have taken in more than anywhere else. And yet we are scolded for not taking in enough.

@thumtlnguyen3626 Do you remember the name of the ship that rescued you? Your story, particularly the part about setting the boat on fire sounds very similar to my father's experience rescuing boat people on the USS Elliot (DD-967).

@thumtlnguyen3626 Ah, different vessel then. Thank you for sharing your story. I was hoping to connect my father to some of the people his ship rescued.

Actually, most Vietnamese vote GOP. They are the most reliably Republican voter block, edging out even Evangelical Christians. Not that a partisan hack like you would bother to even research.

@epramos6800 Basically you are a Rockefeller-Romney Republican. You hold zero in common with the RNC's national platform. Sorry, a "California Republican" outside of either Orange County (Aka Saigon City USA) or Northern California is a liberal Democrat in a Republican state. So tell me, how has being part of the establishment worked out for you? You are a collaborator with the people who bend over and take it from their political opponents like a three dollar street walker. Supporting people who capitulate to political Stockholm Syndrome is not a good look.
1
@epramos6800 And yet you do when you support establishment types against populists like Trump. Believe you me, I know first hand how Democrats pretend to be Republicans. That is how they get elected in Indiana. Mayor Brainard of Carmel Indiana is case in point. He is Obama's favorite Republican Mayor after all.
1
@epramos6800 You didn't get into my head, that is just you acting like a pigeon playing chess. You didn't make any points other than to prove you are a shill for the establishment. And a bigot to boot since you cannot tolerate populist perspectives.

The problem is that Navy command won't let them take action. It would literally have to be a mission of mercy S.O.S. to force their hand. International Law of the High Seas trumps orders from Navy command.

@razeka62 Yeah, and most nevertrumepr opinions stink like they never wiped in their life; the dingleberries are still hanging.

@humanseeksjustice8830 To your first point, you don't need to refer directly to Christianity when the context makes it quite clear what you were insinuating. Nuance is something you think you grasp and then pretend ignorance of it when you get caught. Oh, and the Japanese refer to the God of Abraham in the Christian and Jewish context as either "Kami-san" or "Kami-sama". Allah NEVER receives neither honorific; to do so will get you looks of anger by Muslims in Japan and skepticism by everyone else. As to Eastern faiths, you once again pretend knowledge but show ignorance. Your dilettante understanding of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoarastrism, and Sikhism is pretty glaring.

Because they are spoiled entitled trust fund children who have never experienced true hardship like the boat people have. They have never experienced life outside of the US and so are ignorant of what the rest of the world is really like.
