@rickmorty5745 , you can do whatever you want, but China is entitled to manage their own way. They are not telling you what to do. If they fail, it’s on them; if they succeed, they deserve credit.

@rickmorty5745 , you can judge whatever you like. But China can make up their own priority. Talking about relationships with neighbors, as an American, I am embarrassed at how we treat our own neighbors and former colonies. Example: Who is building up the infrastructure in Panama and the Philippines? China! We, in the West, need to stop talking trash about China, and do better than China with deeds and actions. Empty words mean nothing.

@rickmorty5745 , I think you’re assuming a lot. There is a lot of critique in China. Many of my Chinese friends say that they don’t like that China is spending money to build infrastructure for other countries, because they feel that China is still poor and could use the money itself. You can critique all you want in China. There are many scandals that go viral in China and that’s how the central government gets the pulse of the people and responds to local corruption, for example. What you cannot do in China, nor can you do it in the United States or Europe, is to agitate for overthrowing the government. . You may wish to listen to some of the lectures of the national committee on US China relations. It is a US organization that looks at China in an objective manner. Of course it has a US bias but it is mostly free of political rhetoric.

China is already larger than the USA in purchasing power. A simple currency adjustment would make them larger in US dollar terms.

@rickmorty5745 , it’s not for us to decide that China should be like the West. Clearly, they don’t want to be like us. They don’t tell us how to run our countries so we should stay out of their business. BTW, mosques in the west are shut down all the time, especially if they receive foreign money. How would you like it If other countries send religious proselytizers to your country, like the West sends Christian missionaries to China? It sounds to me like you’re unable to look at the world from the other’s point of view. You how, Chinese people can read English and read foreign papers all the time so they know what goes on abroad. Most of us Westerners cannot read Chinese, all the info we get is through filters, yet we want to stand in judgment of China. I watch DW and France 24 for a view from Europe which is slightly different than from America. But I also try to get the Chinese view. Right now, the Chinese care most about economic development, because their system is producing tremendous economic and technological advancements. Their goal is to surpass the West in economic might. They have a Confucian ethos of hard work, and to never be poor again. Just think about how Asian immigrants in the West do well, because their kids study and don’t indulge in drugs and “freedoms” like Western kids. When I first went to China me and my friends were mocking the Chinese for building roads by hand. Now, their their construction is automated and the most advanced on the world. You have to give credit where credit is due.

@pafry6432 , why can’t you take China’s achievements at face value? For example, you are Panama, a former US colony, and you are enjoying all the infrastructure that China is building; and you benefit from trade and economic growth. Then you have the United States warning of the”trap”, but investing nothing. You know, developed western countries are welcomed anytime to provide grants and payoff Panama’s debts. Plus the country that kidnapped and imprisoned panama’s president is the USA.

It’s like predicting that China will fail because it’s inherently inefficient. The it proves too efficient, they come up with bogus answers.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , you should look at Taiping island, it’s well in the South China Sea and the USA sent a vessel to recover it for the Republic of China.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , did you read the HK security law? HK has many foreigners living in the territory as permanent residents. The law prevents foreigners from funding and interfering in politics. And the law does bars foreign judges from hearing national security cases. Do you know that HK appoints foreign judges to sit on their benches? It’s like in USA, it’s a crime to make a political contribution, if you’re a permanent citizen or foreigner. The Hong Kong protesters were funded by foreigners and were advised by foreign lawyers living in the territory and outside HK. Edit: actually I was wrong. Foreign judges are still allowed to preside over national security cases. How many countries are open enough to have foreign judges on their courts? There are currently 21 foreign judges on HK’s final court of appeals.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , did you read the joint declaration? You may wish to listen to Grenville Cross. He was the chief prosecutor for HK for many years. He’s English. I don’t know of any jurisdiction other than Hong Kong that brings foreign prosecutors and judges into their judiciary. I don’t see anything in the joint declaration that the Chinese violated. The joint declaration was registered at the UN so if the Brits have any issues, the UN is the proper forum to address their concerns. Rule of law means following the proper process.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , so your answer is no, the CPC will not last. Then don’t worry, go to sleep. BTW, China did not invent the extraterritorial application of law. Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada for allegedly violating US law by dealing with a British bank, in Hong Kong. That’s the kind of application of law China now feels free to practice. Westerners should not feel entitled to interfere with Chinese politics when we forbid interference in our own affairs.

@rickmorty5745 , The Chinese didn’t steal anything it was a quid pro quo transfer of technology. Western companies have the choice not to enter the Chinese market. The intellectual property regime is a 20th century invention. The concept is that by providing intellectual property protection, we would increase innovations for the benefit of humanity. Each country has its own intellectual property laws. For example India does not protect drugs as long as the United States because they want to provide access to medicines to their large population. The real gauge of success is how great the number of people who benefit and have access to innovation and technology; and whose lives are improved in the process. Just because you invent something today does not mean that somebody else cannot invent the same thing tomorrow. That’s what human creativity is all about.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , China does not want google to reach into China and operate extraterritorially. If a China service becomes popular, the west will block them also.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , what you say has no relevance. China is sovereign and has its own internal laws. You have no say in how they manage their own internal affairs. If I were China, I would also block google and the like. They spread a western culture of criminality. I am American and I don’t like a lot of American culture.

@nicholasv.i.d.4416 , on the question of Hong Kong, one-country-two-systems is similar to devolution of power in the UK, with Scotland, where scotland has its own parliament and first minister. However, devolution is at the pleasure of the central authorities who may take back power anytime.
