Yes sir they could have and it was done to weaken the western front but the Russian plans for the Iron curtain were going to happen regardless of what the Western Allies wanted because of the amount of Stalin's power Wes so great he knew that if they wanted to press the issue the army could keep marching west and the French and British wanted nothing to do 5 5 more years of war except Churchill and he was just a plain old war monger.
