ptronic Because first you would need to make electricity, then create hydrogen by electrolysis, then compress it (several hundreds of bars), then transport it, then store it again, then fuel your car, then convert it to electricity AGAIN, then turn it into mechanical energy.

@D Jaquith, Thorium powerstations are far away, best case scenario is 30 years from now. That is too late so we have to focus on batteries now. Driving on hydrogen is hideously inefficient and this isn't solved by thorium. A small portion of cobalt sources is questionable regarding human ethics. Biggest part (85%) is mined properly, although it may still be invasive for the earth. The good thing is that battery manufacturers are all determined to minimise and finally eleminate cobalt from batteries. Lithium mining is mainly done from brine lakes and is not invasive.

Also, electrolyzers and fuel cells also require 'rare earth' matels and wear faster than batteries. Plus, fuel cell cars also require (smaller) lithium ion batteries.

D Jaquith Hydrogen combustion engines will never happen. These are even more inefficient than fuel cells and do emit NOx and make noise.

D Jaquith Still you could charge three times the amount of battery EV’s with the same amount of energy.

@DJaquithFL I do understand where you are heading to, but I simply don't see the combustion engine surviving the 21st century. When battery technology develops even further so cobalt won't be an issue anymore and massive recycling is on track, there really is zero reasons to look at hydrogen.

D Jaquith During the past 10 years batteries have been dropping in price big time and this will continue. Also, most EV batteries will outlive the car itself.

D Jaquith You are talking first gen EV’s. Current generation batteries are temperature controlled and last much longer.
