I think that we can rule out the c/2 + ∞ case for a direction preferred by the universe because that would show up in the CMB. There would be a dark spec or dark half-circle or a dark half-sphere (depends on how do you define that preferred direction) on the COBE image. Or maybe the dark patch would be so tiny/slim we couldn't detect it. And, like others in this comment section, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the idea of a preferred anything. However I do like the idea of having different speeds of light in opposite directions in a quantum interaction, so if the speed of light is 1 then they would be in a superposition of the form c₁|↑> + c₂|↓> and such a thing could explain entaglement (as a way for instantaneus communication) maybe even gravity (why it's harder to go away from massive things then towards them) and would definitely be included in a theory of everything like Derek says at the end of the video. But this is just speculation of course, I don't know nearly enough about quantum mechanics.

Wouldn't we know if the speed of light was instantaneous in one directon? There would be a black patch in the CMB, wouldn't there?
