  1. Perhaps it's because I'm somewhat older, but I still think China's golden age of film making was the '5th generation' film makers: Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and others. Like my favorite Hong Kong film makers, Zhou Xingchi (Steven Chow) and Wong Kar Wai, their movies tended to not have a real hero (at least in the early years), or at best an anti-hero. Those people excelled at telling a compelling story about people; stories and people you could relate to.
