Secondly, they are free to return to HK if they think life in a foreign country is not for them. Thirdly, what exactly is a 'second class citizen'? Are you claiming that they are not afforded the same rights as other citizens? Do you have any evidence of that? Are you suggesting they are discriminated against? I'm sure that happens sometimes, just like Mainlanders are sometimes discriminated against in HK, or like people from Henan are sometimes discriminated against in Beijing. When are we going to hear you say that those people are "being treated like second class citizens"?

I love those elderly people in the alley: "Of course we have freedom of speech. See now, we can say anything we want. But of course public opinions are tightly controlled. That's necessary. We know what we can and cannot say". It's very Chinese.

And they come to profit, of course. But to profit, you must first invest, so developing an administration and building infrastructure can help to increase future profits. Once the colonizers leave, you have lost some money, but gained the tools of development. Note: None of the above is a justification for colonization, of course.

@demonvictim You may be misunderstanding the real estate situation in China. You do not 'lease' the land under your property. Rather, you pay an administrative fee for the 'land use rights' for that land. That fee is not high because it's not a lease, and it's a one-time payment. However, you're right that it is unknown exactly what will happen when those 'Land Use Right' certificates run out. The general understanding is that you can extend a further 70 years and pay another small administrative fee, but that is not actually written down anywhere. The historical experience comes from the countryside, where farmers have been able to extend their 20-year land use rights over and over.

@longdog33 "Canadians and Americans love making fun of the canto accent." Ooh, what a tragedy! You don't think Chinese people make fun of foreign accents? The Chinese art of XiangSheng (相声) takes making fun of other accents to a new level. This is universal, not limited to Canada, America, or China. People do that everywhere. Have you ever heard Americans making fun of a southern accent? Or a Minnesota accent? Or a New York accent? Or a French accent? You have the accent you have, everybody else has their own accent, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Better get over it, rather than let it ruin your soft heart.

"We have entered 6th mass extinction phase already". 'The 6th mass extinction', also known as the Holocene Extinction event started already more than 10,000 years ago and is ongoing. Humans have brought species to extinction all that time, not only in recent years. What is different now is that we're actually doing quite a lot about it. Up until about 100 years ago, there were no nature reserves, national parks, or protected areas anywhere in the world. No one cared about species going extinct. There were no animal protection efforts, no WWF, no Greenpeace. India did not have a Ministry of Environment, there was no Wildlife Institute of India, no Forest Survey of India, no protection of tigers, or elephants, or any other species. India and other countries now have a great focus on renewable energy and environmental protection. It will probably get worse before it gets better, but it will definitely get better, slowly but surely, as long as we all work together on the problems.

With a UK BNO passport, they get MORE privileges than people with regular foreign passports. To use your wording, those with UK BNO passports are treated as a better class of people than people from other countries. Of course, once they become UK Citizens, they are treated like any other UK citizen, with all the benefits that bestows on them. This is the standard in every country in the world.

Ok, then foreign citizens are 'second class citizens' in every country around the world, so there is no particular reason to single out HKers and the UK. According to your logic, UK citizens living in HK would also be 'second class citizens'.

I wonder when this was taped. It's all from Shanghai, but it has been way too hot to go for a casual walk along the river since the middle of June. Not long before that, we were all locked up. Most people are wearing masks, so perhaps early to mid June?
