I was in Lijiang in 1996, shortly after a serious 6.6 earthquake had done major damage and killed several hundred people. Many modern buildings were shut off due to safety reasons and large cracks were visible many places. Some buildings had collapsed completely. Even all the way up in DiQing (ZhongDian/Shangri La) some buildings had damage. But the old town in Lijiang was largely intact due to the traditional construction methods. It took quite a while to rebuild the city. It seems nowadays, both people and buildings are much better prepared.

@Kiyoone Well, dams, roads, bridges, etc. can be designed to withstand a certain magnitude of earthquake. That's what they do in Japan and California. You design for the conditions.

Especially along the edge of the Tibetan plateau where there's a major fault line.

Dark Clouds Yes, I think that's the same in China. Should a major quake happen, older structures will not fare well, newer will do better.
