  1. The Libyan coastal town of Derna lies at the mouth of the River Derna, a river that is normally quite dry, just as the whole region is dry. The Derna River has a catchment area of around 500 sqkm, so in a rainstorm like this, it will collect and carry quite a lot of water down to the town. The dam that burst is located appx. 13 km upstream from the town. It is a simple earth dam, and the only dam on the river. In normal times, due to the dry climate, there is little to no reservoir behind the dam.
