  2. China lies on several fault lines and is very prone to earthquakes. Rural housing is least likely to resist shaking, so most fatalities tend to happen in rural areas. In big cities, buildings and infrastructure is much better built and large scale destruction is fairly unlikely (except for older construction). A death toll like the one in Tangshan in 1976 is almost impossible today.
