  1. Well, the point here is mostly to punish France, where cognac comes from. France was a proponent of EU tariffs on EVs because they need to protect their auto jobs. So these tariffs are meant to make French cognac producers angry at their government and maybe change it at the next election. In other words, it hits France where it hurts the most. But will it hurt enough? Unlikely.
