I don't think that is a correct understanding of Communism's relationship with religion. Marxism (and by extension, Communism) have 'materialism' at their foundation. Marx and Mao wrote about this extensively. Materialism stands in opposition to, and excludes, spiritualism, which includes all religions and faiths. According to Marxist thought, religion prevents people from taking a materialist view of life, and it also has the unfortunate effect of diverting people's loyalty from the Party to the religion. That is why a Communist state MUST take a hostile position toward religion, in order to preserve itself.

Sounds about right.

@pepelepew1227 It's possible. I wouldn't know as we no longer have any pro-religion parties in my country's parliament. We did until the 90s.

@pepelepew1227 None of our politicians court leaders of any kind for endorsements. Voters couldn't care less about so-called 'endorsements'. We tend to trust our own judgment. And up to elections, there are lots of debates in the media. As for religious parties, throughout my lifetime (50+ years) no political party professing to be religious has ever gotten more than 10% of the vote. Very few people care about the opinion of priests, rabbis, mullahs, imams, or the pope.

@pepelepew1227 10% was back in the 70s. As I wrote, since the 90s no party with explicit religious views have been voted into parliament. I also don't think there's a risk of religion becoming a significant force. Only 5-10% of the population attend any kind of religious service on a regular basis (2 times or more per month).

@pepelepew1227 Pandering to religious leaders is not an issue in my country.
