It's a little outdated, by about 10-15 years, but it's their first effort, so one can assume they'll be more up-to-date with the next model. Perhaps they'll call it the C919neo.

@pwelele Well, we all have to start somewhere. Designing and building a civil aircraft is extremely complicated, which is why so few companies/countries have managed to do it.

@Indian_Rajput "Chinese origin Singaporeans are Chinese who flee China". Using that same logic, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are Indians.

I think you put the comma in the wrong place. Total casualties during 9/11 were around 3,000 and that includes all 4 flights.

With some heavy government subsidies I think they should be able to sell quite a number of C919s. It'll be all about the price.

It's always about the future, isn't it? Just like in 1958 when Mao promised that China would produce more steel than the UK in 5 years. Eventually, you did, but it took another 25 years.

The video doesn't mention the price, but a bit of internet searching helps. C919 list price is $100.2 million, but average sales price according to CaiXin is around $68.4 million. Competitors A320neo and B737 MAX-8 sell for $49 million and $51 million, respectively.

@jigsaw2281 I don't know. Do they make their own aircraft? They may make military aircraft, but not civilian aircraft.

@ragabara1031 So it's a bad idea for China to make their own parts and components? That's what you're saying.
1
@ragabara1031 "China's aim to achieve self-sufficiency across all domains". Ok, but you also write: "globally sourced parts and components also helps with deterring threats to China's sovereignty". And you also write: "An aircraft firm that does everything on its own doesn't offer that kind of advantage for its home country." These statements are directly contradictory.

@backpackpepelon3867 But the C919 is not sold at a cheaper price. According to CaiXin, the C919 goes for an average $68 million, while the A320neo and the B737MAX-8 sell for around $50 million.

@backpackpepelon3867 It's not cheaper than its competitors. C919 costs $68 million. A320neo sells for $49 million. B737 MAX-8 goes for $51 million.
