I remember back in the 90s in Shanghai, manhole covers were often stolen from city streets in the night for their scrap value. Eventually, the city came up with new manhole covers made of composite materials with no resale value. I know this is a different situation, but it reminded me of those days.

@hkraytai I don't remember reading anything about that, and I don't think many people had BBQ parties back then. But I do remember someone cut down a famous and much loved bronze statue in the middle of Huaihai Rd. to sell as scrap metal.
