  1. A lot of these apartment buildings were built in the 80s and 90s when China was a very low-income country. Installing elevators back then would have made the apartments prohibitively expensive. But now, 30-40 years later, many of these old communities are getting elevators installed, including the one I live in, where the process is ongoing. My walk-up got one installed 2-3 years ago, but a few other buildings are still waiting for the work crews to get to their door.
