The Vietnam War was not 'the West', it was only the US. The Korean War was South Korea joined by the West, against North Korea joined by China. Everybody is pretty equal in that war.

I thought Ukrainian and Polish language were closer, but the Polish translation of Zelensky is quite different.

@jeffreylai6796 Thanks for that. Even when you're told about the different Slavic language groups, it's hard to know how close they are. Germanic languages include Nordic languages, German, Dutch and English, but you wouldn't pick them up with going to school. Nordic languages are pretty similar to an extent where they understand most of each others' language.

@brendon1689 I think in the clip Zelensky spoke to a crowd of Polish people? I'm too tired to watch it again. You tell me.

@brendon1689 Thanks for clarifying.

@legendaryblood1937 Ok, you may make the argument that the US constitutes 'the West' and that other western countries don't matter, but then why even mention them in the first place? Why not just say 'USA'. Also, are you claiming that Chairman Mao did not send in 250,000 troops to fight in the war? Then why does official Chinese government figures list 150,000 dead Chinese soldiers in the Korean war?

@chrislee5685 Yes, you're right. I'm thinking about it from a European perspective. Yes, several other countries were involved, just no one from Europe.

@chrislee5685 France and the UK did not take part in the Vietnam War. Vietnam was a colony of France until independence in 1954. The Vietnam War didn't start until 1955.

@chrislee5685 We shouldn't forget the USSR and China also both took part in the Vietnam War with several hundred thousands of troops on the ground.

@thesoggiestshart So what? The US sent troops after North Korea crossed the 38th parallel. Basically identical. I'm not trying to make the case that the US was more justified than China, but that both countries are willing to go a long way to protect their national interests. That's only normal, for China and for USA (nd other countries). Nobody wants to be a doormat for others.

@thesoggiestshart Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, that seems accurate to me. China doesn't want US forces on its border, perfectly understandable.
