  1. In many societies, when the (economic) future seems uncertain, people will retreat to the tried and true traditions because it gives them comfort in the face of that uncertainty. That is just basic human psychology. Unfortunately, that also often means people will be less tolerant of 'unusual' behavior, because that behavior may lead to uncertain outcomes. Of course, in reality, different ways of living one's life rarely lead to societal ills, and in some cases can lead to a new blossoming of creativity and growth.
