  3.  @ittakes2-2tango  I second that and add that the most touristy sections were further restored and renovated in the 1980s, 1990s to be safe for tourists. Whether you're at BaDaLing, MuTianYu or SiMaTai, just go to the end of the crowds and you will see much more worn down sections of the wall, many of which may be dangerous to traverse.

  4. The idea of describing a vacation week as 'Golden Week' started in Japan. The term was later adopted by China in 1999. 1999 was the first year where Chinese people got a whole week off for both Spring Festival, May 1st, and National Day.
