Last comment: "So why aren't we getting the same opportunities here in Bangladesh"? Well, it's because Bangladesh is currently at an early stage of development. Before Bangladesh, other countries did the exact same work: China, Egypt and many years ago, Europe and North America. After Bangladesh moves up to the next stage of development, this dangerous work will move somewhere else.

@xijinpig8982 Clearly, @annieelle doesn't know that Bangladesh is Muslim while India is mostly Hindu.

@Madd.annie26 It's always great to learn new things. Keep it up. 😉

Capitalism enabled the leather industry to move to more safe and cleaner ways to tan leather. China, Soviet Union, Vietnam have all processed leather this way, as have western/capitalist countries. It's not about the economic system applied, but about the level of economic, social, and technological development reached.

@gaeig They will move up the same way other countries have moved up, and the same way they have already been moving up for several decades. If you saw what life was like in Bangladesh 30-40 years ago, you'd understand. And just for the record, I have lived in the developing world for almost 30 years. I know what it's about from first hand experience.

@gaeig Ok, so you also have first hand experience with the economic and social development of India. Ask your parents if life now is better or worse than 30 years ago. India has a good opportunity to double or triple its economy over the next 10-20 years. Go out and take some photos of your local community now, and then look at them again in 20 years to see the difference. And for good measure, visit a countryside village and do the same. Nobody is expecting Utopia, but you and Bangladeshis can expect much better than today. But to reach a level on par with where the developed world is today, that is going to take 40-50 years.

Fast or slow, it's probably the same leather. Only when you get up to the top of the line leather fashion will the leather be processed in a more modern way.
