"eponymous" = named after a person. A better choice would be 'enlightening'. Might have been an auto-complete error.

Don't you use oil or gas in your life? It's a resource that is still needed in our society and we can't just turn off the tap from one day to the next. The energy transition is a long-term process. As long as we make progress every day, things will get better.

Well, it's asking a question, a question that will only be answered in time. I'd rather have real vegetables than vegetables pretending to be meat. Vegetables are delicious.

No prosthetics were featured in this video.

@jenro3626 Well, I guess Filipino people end up getting what they deserve. It's a democracy, after all.
2
@business Thanks very much! :-)

Are you referring to Thailand? It is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Sure there are some scams, and sure there will be some people who don't like foreigners, but overall it is pretty awesome!

The processing of waste as a business is a phase that most developing countries go through. They know that it is a pollutant, but their choice is between some people dying of air pollution versus some people dying of poverty related causes. As the country develops its economy, this waste processing will gradually become unacceptable and the industry will move to the next country that is happy to get the business. Once upon a time, all that waste was processed in what is now 'the rich world' before environmental standards changed and it got shipped abroad. The same change will happen in Thailand and it is even likely that Thailand will at some stage export their own waste to some other country.

If the world wasn't ruled by greed, we'd still all be poor and living as hunter-gatherers.

@@bobs_1429 Why should they pay more than the law requires? If you think they should pay more, tell your elected politicians. Do you normally choose to pay more in taxes than you have to? Don't be naive.

"If you know the money behind Bloomberg". I know the money behind Bloomberg, and a simple Google search can let everybody know: Bloomberg is a privately held company. It is majority owned by its founder, Michael Bloomberg, who owns 88% of the company. Bloomberg is primarily a financial news organization, but also reports on general business and economic news. Bloomberg's primary income comes from the 'Bloomberg Terminal', a kind of connected screen that gives its customers real-time stock quotes and a multitude of other real-time financial information.

Burning it (in an incinerator designed for the purpose) is the most environmentally friendly option. Nordic countries all do this.

@FC-xc3zy China is renewing passports again, without restrictions. This started soon after the zero covid policy was ended in November, 2023. To be fair, I also feared that the restrictions would be permanent, but that doesn't seem to be the case, at least for now.

What have the Romans ever done for us?
2
@novogral7889 Sorry to hear that. But let's wait and see. Maybe something can be done to avert disaster.
2
This seemed to be a trailer for a video series, not very informative on its own.
2
Why is it the producers rather than the consumers who should deal with the waste problem?
2
@danellis-jones1591 "30 companies are responsible for 70% or so of the total greenhouse gas emissions." Ok, I haven't checked that statistic, but let's go with it. What value do they bring to society in return? If we shut them down, how will that affect society? If we force them to pay, won't that mean they will just charge us for that extra expense by raising prices? No matter who you blame, in the end you and I and everybody else will have to pay the bill, because we're all part of the problem, we're all part of society, we're all part of this world.

They buy it. It's not just dumped there. There are sellers and buyers.

A slight likeness.

"disillusionment with the West". And what were the illusions about the West people had before?
1
@collo5070 Northern Europe. It's common in several countries in the Nordics. Generally, we do not use landfills, except for some construction waste and other, non-combustible waste. Some construction waste can be reused for road construction.
1
@theburden9920 "your comparing north korea to china really?" Only to illustrate that when we say 'it's only a matter of time', it doesn't mean very much unless we say how much time we allow. You could travel back to the stone age and say 'one day we'll all fly through the sky in big machines, it's only a matter of time'. That would be a true statement, but a ludicrous one to make in the stone age. So, North Korea? Who knows what North Korea will be like 100 years from now? or China? Or the US?
1
@theburden9920 I don't know what that is supposed to mean.

@aleenaprasannan2146 "Dharavi vehemently try to stop any kind of redevelopment". There's a famous Gujarati vegan restaurant in Dharavi called Shree Thaker Bhojanalay. I hope I get a chance to visit it before any redevelopment occurs.
1
@aleenaprasannan2146 "you'll understand exactly how monstrous sweat shop factories can get." Unfortunately, all countries have to go through this phase to get to a better place. India will do it, China did it before India, Hong Kong did it before China, Japan did it before HK, USA did it before Japan, and Europe did it before USA. Countries that have already been through this process can look back and say "that was terrible, we can never allow this again", but countries that are at the beginning have no choice; they must go through it to get to the other side.

3:01 Dr. Albert Chi looks a little like the character Vince Masuka from Dexter. I was half expecting him to make a perverse comment.
1
@therock8224 They may not become 'developed' soon, but they will develop their economy and society to become better than it is now. At some stage, there will be practices that are no longer acceptable. I don't think this is related to their mentality. It's just a question of a society developing.

Reject at your own risk.

You make it sound like 5% growth is a law of nature in China. As if it just happens automatically.
1
@Fire-ci4se Well, it certainly has up until now, and much more than 5%. But there are not a lot of people left in the countryside: Only about 220 million rural residents under the age of 40 (older people don't migrate to cities), so the rate of urbanization must slow. Useful infrastructure is almost completely built out. There's still a need for expanding the power grid and power production, but most useful rail, road, ports, airports have been built, so new infrastructure won't add as much to the economy as 10 years ago. It's going to get progressively harder to grow as the country becomes more developed.
1
@Fire-ci4se Yes, I think that's the right path to follow. Let's see what happens over the next ten years.
1
@TechnoGears-2023 "You have the choice between an IMF loan at a rate of 20 to 30% with the impossibility of repaying for life and a Chinese loan of 2 to 5%" 1) The IMF does not give loans for development projects. That is not the purpose of the IMF. IMF financing is meant to help member countries tackle balance of payments problems, stabilize their economies, and restore sustainable economic growth. Perhaps you are thinking of the World Bank, which does give loans for development projects. 2) World Bank infrastructure development loans are around 2.7% with zero interest the first 6 years of loan repayment. 2) Most Chinese BRI loans have been financed by the Chinese Exim Bank at commercial rates, which until recently were around 3-6% (China's PBOC has recently cut its interest rate several times to boost the domestic economy). Chinese Exim Bank rates are among the highest because they're commercial, but they are sometimes attractive to borrowers because they will lend money to projects that are higher risk, and which other banks will not lend to.

@cloakster "He basically makes Rupert Murdoch look poor."....and obese.
1
@franki1990 Greed is the driver of creative technological development. When hunter-gatherers first realized that they could plant seeds to get more grain the following year, they did so exactly in order to get more grain, not because they wanted to express their creativity.
1
I don't think this will be successful. Much better for the US to help India develop their solar industry, and then buy from the cheapest supplier. Playing India and China against each other should ensure low prices and a steady supply. The solar manufacturing industry seems to be made for large, middle income countries (with future players possibly being Nigeria or Brazil).
1
@Aurora-bv1ys I agree

"The Chinese never forget the American help Chinese education since Qing Dynasty and fighting with the Japanese during world war II." I hope you're right, but it's something I have almost never heard mentioned in my many years in China.
1
@steveyu6434 Well, there's no doubt that the US sees China as an adversary, just like China sees USA as an adversary. That has been clear since 1949 and it has never really changed, even in the 'honeymoon years' of the 80s and 90s.
1
@李大人-m7p Yes, that is a historical fact. We cannot go back and change history. On the other hand, do you think it's wise to seek revenge for what happened more than 100 years ago? If that's the case, there are a lot of countries that will seek revenge over a lot of other countries. And how far should we go back?
1
@刘刘-y4r Every country has a right to defend itself, but once time has passed, we should accept historical fact. So if China wants to rob USA, USA will defend itself. And I'm sure China will defend itself if a foreign country tries to rob China. China has that right.
1
@李大人-m7p I'm not American. It is unwise to automatically believe that everyone who disagrees with you are American. It shows a level of intellectual and emotional immaturity.
1
I'm writing this 5 days after the video was posted, and only 5,700 people have viewed the video. So, does Trump really have a grip on America's Attention, or is that just something the media believes?
1
@@bobs_1429 Ok, so persuade your legislature to change the law so corporations pay more in taxes. Perhaps you will be told the reason those changes are not made. I'm guessing it's because they create so many jobs that it would be detrimental to the national economy to force them to pay more. Btw, you're using 'straw manning' wrong.
1
The point is to complete the already sold apartments and hand them over to the buyers, thereby preventing large-scale social unrest. Whether the developers get out of it alive is less concerning for the government. The banks are owned by the state, so you could say it is primarily a 'government social stability program'.
1
@stephanledford9792 I agree.

Come on, all soft drinks, fruit drinks, and even natural fruit juices contain citric acid which slowly eats its way through a metal can. The 'special chemical cocktail' is simply a specially formulated plastic coating that can be sprayed on, cover the entire surface without gaps, and which is non-toxic.

In the 70s, we had Jazz Fusion, but it lost its popularity in the 90s. In the 80s, we got Fusion Food which gained some popularity, but that went away, too. Soon, we will get Fusion energy. What will it sound like, what will it taste like? I don't know.

Re. Marathon runners: The times I have run in organized marathons water has always been provided in paper cups, not plastic bottles.

I think the point was that in the event of a war where some ships get destroyed, it will be harder for the US to replace them quickly due to the low ship building capacity.
