This is just what the country needs to get its economy back on track!
242
Three economists just won the Nobel Prize this year for pointing out that functional institutions are the difference between a successful economy and a non-successful one. The DRC needs well functioning institutions: A legal system that is upheld by a judicial system, that is protected by a police and security force, that is upheld by a representative system, that is upheld by the legal system. Unfortunately, every so often, personal human desires get in between these systems before they have a chance to grow and become a part of the culture. No one can expect any country without these systems to suddenly create them overnight, but the first small steps have to be taken, and after that, more small steps. This can take decades, or even centuries.

Germany shouldn't block the border with Poland, but rather help Poland patrol their border with Belarus.

One thing you can definitely say about Mark Zuckerberg: He doesn't have much charisma!

"The risk of nuclear war in Europe is higher than at any time since the Cold War". That might be true, but the risk is not nearly as high as DURING the Cold War. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I remember it well, but I'm not nearly as afraid now as I was then. This war is very manageable.

@mr.terrific601 Don't worry, I am very much joking.

They use hypersonic missiles in the hope of speeding up their slow campaign.

When the pilot popped that balloon, did he hear a child crying with sadness?

"Indonesia didnt need EU to buy Indonesian Nickel". So why are you complaining? If you don't want the EU as your costumer, just ignore what they say.
28
The term 'credible evidence' is wrong. Evidence is always credible, so it makes no sense to add the qualifier 'credible'. Back to school.
26
@Adam What do you think needs to be fixed there?
20
@McBafoon "If EU doesn't need our raw nickel the why complaining". Who said the EU doesn't need your nickel? We do need it. We want to buy it, but we want to limit the impact to the environment. That's all there is to it. Now there are negotiations happening. It's all part of a typical process. Nothing to get angry about.
18
"If water is safe to use Japan should keep it". That statement makes no logical sense. If it is really safe, why would they keep it? If it is really safe, what is the problem pouring it into the ocean. Seems to me what you really think is the opposite: If the water is NOT safe, Japan should keep it. But it IS safe, and that is why they can pour it into the ocean without problems. The waste water in its current form is probably safer than your urine. So if you're concerned about ocean safety, don't ever pee in the water.

140,000 sounds like a lot of people, but there are literally more than 100 countries with a higher Covid-19 death rate than Indonesia.
17
That's not how earthquakes work.
17
That is because all the more dangerous isotopes have been removed over the last 10 years through many, many chemical processes. All that is left now is Tritium. The waste water has been tested by numerous research laboratories around the world, including three in Austria and one in Monaco, all labs specializing in nuclear isotope research.

3:20 The reporter's name is Johannes, but for a second I heard the host address him as 'your highness'.😂

@McBafoon Europe does not have the right to dictate, as you correctly say. But Europe has the right to make requests. And, as WTO member states, have the right to put the case before the WTO. This is just following the rules. Of course, Indonesia also has the right to deny Europe's requests. And Indonesia has the right to make its case before the WTO. This is no different from a badminton match between a European country and Indonesia: Both players can protest and ask the referee for a judgment. In this case, WTO is the referee.
11
You should change schools and go to a better one. You can certainly use the compound 'credible allegation'. Of course the meaning is different from 'evidence', but that doesn't make the term illogical or wrong.
10
"a more important tunnel would be between Estonia and Finland". More important for Estonia and Finland, I'm sure, but not very useful for Denmark and Germany. Fortunately, it's possible for more than just two countries to connect by tunnel.
10
@superdexterz99 Yes, Europe has NO RIGHT to dictate. But Europe, just like any other region/nation has the right to make requests. This is a negotiation! How hard is that to understand? People can disagree, and then they discuss in the hope that they can reach an agreement later. Surely, you must have tried something like this in your own life.
10
@pogogod6036 Why can't they want to buy raw nickel? Indonesia may not want to sell their raw nickel, and then there's no deal. It's simple business, nothing to do with colonialism. In fact, I'd like you to explain how this can in any way be interpreted as 'colonialism'. If you go to a shop and ask to buy something the shop won't sell you, does that mean you're a colonizer?
9
@pogogod6036 "don't make a fuss about it in WTO". If member states cannot bring a case before the WTO, then why do we have the WTO to begin with? Why did Indonesia join the WTO if Indonesia doesn't want to allow the use of the WTO rules?
9
"Right now they're looking at possible applications" Translation: We have this new machine, but we don't know how to use it or what to use it for.
9
The best thing Nepal can do for now is focus on economic development. That will give the financial basis to improve the built environment and move people down from the mountains to safer areas. Don't expect the world to come save you.
9
Most countries will continue using coal, until they find a better way to make energy.
8
@AjayTiwari-en9nz "Our per capita income is just $2100 right now which expected to reach around $7000 in the next 10 years". That seems overly optimistic. Such a big change would require a 15% growth rate annually every year for the next 10 years. That's practically impossible.
8
They say Kallas is instead in the front position for EU's foreign commissioner. I'm from the Nordics and I like Kallas, too, and I generally like the very strong position of both Poland and the Baltics.
8
I can easily see China putting high tariffs on milk and other dairy products from Europe. Milk consumption has rapidly decreased in China in recent years, so putting high tariffs on imported milk would not hurt China's economy at all. If anything, it would help struggling domestic dairy producers. However, even without tariffs on dairy, European exporters are bound to see declines in sales to China.
8
@EarnestWilliamsGeofferic I don't know where you're from, but infrastructure projects in Europe are not paid out of some big, common piggy bank. This particular tunnel is paid for by Denmark, with a minority contribution from the EU. When Finland and Estonia decide to build their tunnel, they'll also have to pay. Yes, it's called the 'European Union', but it's still made up of many independent countries with their own policies and their own budgets.
7
Don't forget that African countries without resources are equally poor.
7
Where is EU's infrastructure crumbling? We keep maintaining and improving on the infrastructure we have had for centuries, and we also build new infrastructure. You can actually measure that Europe's infrastructure is better than it has ever been in history.
7
Several newly independent African countries have tried socialism, some even for decades, but it didn't work out for them.
6
That was 10 years ago, when the waste water was 'fresh'. It has since been treated chemically to remove all elements, except the Tritium. Tritium cannot be removed by any chemical process, it can only be diluted.
6
I'm getting a little jaded with Greta Thunberg. I hope that soon we will get a new activist, younger, more depressed, more anxious, more hysterical, more preachy, more sanctimonious, and more messianic than Greta. Me always want more.
6
I think that's highly unlikely! Riding a bike through an 18 km tunnel is neither safe nor healthy. All of Denmark's other cross-sea links ban cyclists and pedestrians. Mopeds may be allowed if they can be designated as motorcycles. A question of speed, I suppose.
6
@@jorgej8855 "who is behind International Atomic Energy Agency?" The United Nations, which is an inter-governmental organization set up, managed, and supported by almost all countries in the world.
6
@Guizambaldi "I don't think USSR leaders were as irrational as Putin." I don't think Putin is irrational. He is guided by the pursuit of power and prestige (for him and his country), like everybody else. He's made mistakes, and I hope Ukraine will turn out to be the biggest mistake he's ever made.
5
@pogogod6036 "you don't know that the term actually have a meaning?" Colonialism: 'the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.' Neo-colonialism: 'the use of economic, political, cultural, or other pressures to control or influence other countries, especially former dependencies.' Any other questions?
5
While from our point of view it may seem logical for Russia and China to make a joint space station, from their point of view, I don't think so. Despite all the rhetoric about 'unlimited relationship', these two nations don't trust each other.
5
Pen your cattle, pen your goats! Don't let them run wild but bring the fodder to them instead. While climate change may have had some impact on their situation, human destruction of the local environment by over use is the biggest reason for this degradation in large parts of Africa. Fortunately, we're seeing more and more examples of land restoration, so that's good.
5
There is not a single French colony in Africa. If there is, can you name it (or them)? To my knowledge, all African countries are independent nations. Their cooperation with France is voluntary. If they no longer want to cooperate with France, it is very easy to cancel any agreement they have.
5
That matches pretty well with what I see here in Shanghai, but I think the EV share here is closer to 35%. Tesla is very popular, but so are NIO, X-Peng, Li Auto and BYD. I feel BYD still has a 'low cost' image, a little bit 土 compared to the others. This is in large part due to the unexciting designs.
5
@justinjames__423 No, you're being hysterical, you have no evidence of wrongdoing, you have no evidence of Japan polluting the ocean beyond safe limits. You only have belief without evidence, and you have anger and resentment.
5
@Adam That will be up to our citizens to prevent. We're quite good at that.
5
Italy isn't angry, they're just cancelling the agreement. To use your analogy, it's like cancelling your membership of a supermarket you don't use. No big deal.
4
@moviesenthil An allegation is essentially like an 'accusation'. An accusation or an allegation can be more or less credible. There is nothing wrong with this usage.
4
Don't worry, it's probably just a minor hiccup.
4
@ranapriliaful Surely, WTO is there for a reason. WTO has the ability to make judgments on trade practices. All parties in this case are members of the WTO, so it's not the wrong forum.
4
@pogogod6036 "the equivalent of filing a police report". If Indonesia's actions are against WTO rules, then yes, it is a little like filing a police report. I guess time will tell whether Indonesia is following the rules or not. Don't forget, Indonesia itself signed on to those rules. Indonesia wanted them, now they have to follow them (and of course that is the same for the EU). As for your claims of colonialism, it's the kind of word weak people throw around when they have no real argument. Colonialism would be if Europe went to Indonesia and took over management of the entire country (or if Indonesia took over management of Timor Leste). That's not going to happen, so you can calm down.
