  2. I see an increasing number of NIO vehicles on the streets of Shanghai, though outpaced by Tesla Model 3s. NIO is the first Chinese vehicle manufacturer to have put efforts into building a brand, not just a car, and it's paying off. A large number of Chinese vehicle manufacturers have no idea of what branding is. Every model looks different, the grills look different, there are no distinguishing features on the front or back that make people go "That's a xyz car!" Their logos are often anonymous and weak as are their designs. NIO is very different on every front. They also have several westerners working on exactly these aspects.

  4. Many of the solutions proposed are already being implemented in more and more industrialized countries, but it's a relatively slow process. I think decade by decade we'll continue to see improvements in our environment. As long as we're moving in the right direction I'm pretty happy.

  5.  @calmwins  Tesla, inc. is a public company and its market value is a direct reflection of its stock price. In other words, individual stock price multiplied by number of stocks = market value/market capitalization. If you owned all Tesla shares and you sold them, you would end up with a certain amount of money. That would be the value of the company at the time of sale. Just like an old refrigerator or a Picasso painting.

  6. I remember when Starbuck's opened their first store in Shanghai in 1999. Lippo Plaza on HuaiHai Rd., facing the busy shopping street. It immediately became a popular spot for the up and coming young professionals. Before that, there weren't more than 2 or 3 places in town where you could buy a cafe latte (one of them being Park 97, long since closed).

  8. Disparities within the Asian-American group seem to reflect their ethnic/national/cultural background. For example, Hmong Americans, who are among the poorest in America, are also among the poorest within Asia. Not only were they persecuted after the Vietnam War by the Lao government, but even long before that, Hmong have traditionally lived on marginal lands throughout Laos, Vietnam and China. Today, the Hmong/Miao larger group are very much behind other groups within their home countries. Burmese come from a country which has been mired in authoritarian rule with little economic development for decades, and thus it is not surprising that they come to America with a starting point that is far behind Chinese, for example. Han Chinese have been among the most successful ethnic group within China for millennia, and so again, it's not surprising that the cultural traits that made them successful within Asia also make them successful in America. Most Vietnamese that came as refugees after the Vietnam War are actually ethnic Chinese who were persecuted by the ethnic Vietnamese.

  17. Most of the copper produced today is already being recycled. It's much cheaper to recycle copper than to produce new copper. If there's money in it, someone will find a way to do it. At the same time, new copper is produced because we consume more and more of it.

All I stated early on is that the actual monetary value of a company is reflected in the share price. The two co-founders interviewed have seen the value of their share of Tesla go up many-fold since the interview was taped. It might go down later. It's really not more complicated than that. And let's try to discuss without insulting each other. Insults are not arguments and they do not further the conversation.

  20. I thought KFC was 'the place to be' for kids in China 25 years ago. It's the place parents would take their kid on June 1st (Children's Day). Nevertheless, I agree that McDonald's has that comfort factor that many other restaurants lack: A clean, bright and colorful environment, heating in winter, cooling in summer, casual group dining, a great place to do your homework in peace. Purely anecdotally speaking, I feel McDonald's is getting more popular than KFC nowadays. I don't have any numbers to back that up, though.

  25. Hello from Shanghai, China's wealthiest city. I see a ton of Teslas in the streets; it has really exploded over the last year. Other EVs I often see are: NIO, X-Peng, Lynk & Co, Li, and a few others. Since most people in cities here live in apartment high rises, charging is going to be a challenge and I don't really know how they do it. People living on the 4th-5th floor roll extension cables out their windows down to ground level.

That equates to 30 cents per laptop. It used to cost only 10 cents per laptop computer, so yes, the price of your MacBook has gone up 20 cents due to these evil, greedy container shipping companies. Your claim that shipping is a 'huge factor' is simply false. The reality is that a very large part of the price of many goods is due to advertising and marketing. A huge proportion. For known brands, it's probably over 30% of the price you pay that goes to advertisers. But without advertising and marketing, you probably wouldn't buy the product in the first place.

And the price you paid for the shares, does that not indicate the value of the company at the time of purchase? I claim that it does. If you then want to take the company off the market, keep it private, or even shut it down, that is your decision, but what you paid was its value at the time.

In several aspects, we're making improvements: Alternative energy is getting built out, many large species in the developed world are increasing their numbers, tree cover is increasing, desertification being arrested in many places. We're not there yet, but we're moving in the right direction.

  50. It's very different from quarter to quarter, year to year. According to Cal-Maine's financials, net profits varied from 8% in Q1 to 25% in Q4, 2022. However, 2022 was a record year. In the 5 years prior to 2022, it looks like profits were around 5-10%.

  57. As she said, GPS can only send, it cannot receive. Therefore, it does not (yet) have the ability to track your phone. China's Beidou can both send and receive, so it can track your phone. But I would not be surprised if the US will implement this ability in future systems. I would.

  58.  @katepausig8562  Yes, that is certainly true, which is why elementary school teachers in NYC average 80,000/year. As a single tax filer, you'll end up with around 4,700/month after tax. It's by no means as high as a doctor or lawyer, but it's also not a high-skill job. Teaching is pretty easy, though not all have a talent for being a GOOD teacher. I think we can all remember one or two bad teachers from our youth, just like we can remember one or two great teachers who changed our lives.

  71. It's basically scrapped. What we rarely hear in the media is that when they announced the 3-child-policy, they also said that no one having more than 3 children would be sanctioned in any way. So it's a sort of odd political statement: You can now have three children, but if you have more, we're not going to focus on it. Perhaps a way to save face for the government.

Lots of unpopular rich people. I think stock price is determined by a belief in future earnings, and that is also the consensus belief. Is Tesla at risk of going bankrupt soon? I don't see it, but I'm happy to hear your arguments for why that might be the case.

  102. Actually, there are regularly people sleeping under bridges, etc., but it is debatable whether you can really call them 'homeless'. They will often be migrants trying their luck in the city, but not having enough money to rent a room. Sleeping under the stars is sometimes tolerated, other times people are chased away.
