  1. Shuting down the Gulf would have the Advantage of forcing the US to choose between showing weakness or fighting for Israel (think of the election), thus puting pressure on the US to put pressure on Israel.

  2.  @dawntraveler42  yes that will be costly, but Iran faces oil sanctions anyway (plus they could then acuse the US of ecological warfare) Iranian Ships have a habit of sinking (so the US would save them the Embarrasment) and the Point for Iran is not to win, or block Hormus, but to cause Pain to deter from further actions.
