  1. Given the Ceasaropapist Tradition of the Orthodox Church, since the Byzantine Empire, this is somewhat unsurprising (yet still regretable). To my knowledge the US chapter of the Russian Orthodox Church declared Independence in 43, because the Patriarchy in Moscva praised Stalin. Not to mention the (ab)use of Church Offices in Jerusalem for espionage.

  2. After the "six day war" the KGB abused the Russian Orthodox representation in Jerusalem as a spy station. So i guess they have, shall we say: "long standing ties".
