Discrete calculus! Upon reaching the start of the chapter "The Master Formula", you got me thinking that the constant sequences adding up to polynomials like that had something to do with continued fractions, as numbers with only irrational square roots in them can be constructed using repeated integers in the denominators of continued fractions. Also, I didn't see the chain rule make an appearance here.
