The state seals and coats of arms represent the histories of those states very well. They do not need to change. But seals and coats of arms are not the most visible symbols of the states. Their flags are. But flags can be redesigned in such a way that their histories and those of their states can remain represented, e.g., a more simplified depiction of an element that is already on the flag, like what CGP Grey suggested with Connecticut. The reason you would want a child to be easily able to draw the flag of where (s)he lives from memory is that it is a way of instilling pride in the child of his or her homeland from a very young age. And if the child's simplification of a flag leaves it still recognizable by an adult, then the flag is a good design. I mean you would not want to simplify the flag of Rhode Island to a blank white square because then it would not be recognizable at all as the flag of Rhode Island. 26:12 - I noticed that UK flag hoisted upside down the moment I saw it. 44:25 - The flag of South Sudan has six colours on it, same as South Africa.

Just don't display it on the Key Bridge. Because it's gone. The bridge, not the flag.

But you don't want the flag of Chicago being used as the flag of Illinois, amirite?
