  1. It was calculated, not directly measured. Tried synchronizing your clocks using GPS? And have you tried putting an observer, such as a second, semi-silvered mirror, at the halfway point? It would reflect half the light back, and let the rest of the light through to bounce off the second mirror, so you could leverage the two-way speed of light measurements in a certain way. And then repeat this experiment in the exact opposite direction. Essentially this could be called the "Einstein simultaneity crisis".
