Tbh I think it's mostly a social media thing. You know, people who post a ton of crazy shit online but are too socially anxious to look you in the eye in real life.

@First Last IIRC "slav" originates from "slova / słowa", which means "(of the) word" - as in, "people who speak our language". Germans are called "nemets / niemcy" etc. in Slavic languages - "mute", or "people who don't speak our language".

@First Last Looked it up; apparently from Greek "sclava", which means a Slavonic-speaking captive. So yeah, the etymology of slave is derived from "Slav".

@brucelevine6517 Propaganda works best when there's a grain of truth hidden among the wheatfield of lies. I'm from the UK and I really think the West is heading in a bad direction socially... I'd still rather live here than Russia. Although nowadays, I'd rather be American. If society's gonna fall apart, I wanna own the means to protect myself.

Although the ads are of course 99% bullshit they're based on real social issues in the USA - just warped and exaggerated to the point where they're only loosely connected to reality. Also, whatever issues America is going through right now, it's still a thousand times better than Russia.

One of the most effective ways to lie is to start with something that is true and exaggerate and distort it until it's complete horseshit. I would argue the current cultural trajectory we're on in the West IS destructive - but it's still a thousand times better to live here than Russia.
