  1. Right. "Ukraïna" literally means "frontier" or "borderland". Ukraine was heavily contested between Poland and Russia in the 17th century. Eventually, the name "Ukraine" took on a significance independent of the literal meaning as the concept of nationalism spread among the Ukrainian intelligentsia. The story of Ukrainian nationhood is really interesting but also very confusing! It's hard to explain it in a straightforward way... because it's not straightforward.
