@julius43461 The Romanian government paid a one-off bonus to new parents, but didn't offer any long-term support. So people had kids for the cash, then put them into orphanages so they wouldn't have to pay to raise them. This is an example of disastrous, poorly thought-out government policy.

This is the thing, some governments think they can raise birth rates just by giving a one-off cash bonus. That's what PiS tried in Poland. But people aren't so easily swayed into making such a big decision. They need a promise of long-term support, not just a one-off payment.

The Soviet Union had miserable orphanages too, where kids were horribly neglected. Modern Russia is sliding back into all the worst excesses of the Soviet Union, without even providing the basic economic security the USSR did. I'm not saying the USSR was good (it sucked) - but housing was cheap, heating was cheap, you were guaranteed a job etc. Modern Russia expects you to throw your life away in the name of the nation and won't even give you anything back. Romania has done very well rebuilding itself since the 90s, we can only imagine how much better it could be without the fifty years of misery the USSR forced on it. The USSR even stole Romania's gold reserves...

@julius43461 Dunno, but Romania was very poor at the time. The handout could've been small, but big for them if that makes sense.

@Cat-j9e9x I am mad about the legal immigrants also. The UK is too permissive, we let just about anyone in and it trashes the job and housing market and creates cultural tension when they do crazy things (that the police refuse to deal with because that's racist or something)

@Sernum05 Thanks for giving the context. I knew Ceaucescu was a brutal dictator but I did not understand just how brutal.

@MCEdziits No need, if they ban dying the guys on the frontline will be legally obligated to come home alive

@thewokefindergeneral7631 The UK is indeed cooked, if I remember right 3 times as many people got in legal trouble for social media posts in the UK than Russia last year Considering Russia has double the UK's population that's even worse

@MattTheSpratt Hahahaha no, enjoy your fine for upsetting two-tier Kier on social media

@backyard_expert "Everyone who disagrees with me is a bot" Really not the sick burn you think it is, chief

@KroiAlbanoiArbanon If you were really brave you'd call Benjamin Netanyahu names. After all, look at what he's doing, it's worse than Putin. But then you'd actually get yourself in trouble, and you wouldn't get free upvotes for having the "right" opinion...

@julius43461 Communist Romania incentivised, through propaganda and economic policy, childbirth... they didn't do anything to ensure parents raised their children to adulthood. It's not so much that the government encouraged people to abandon their kids, it's that they didn't do anything to prevent it. Communist Romania was very poor. A lot of people had kids for the money but then decided they'd be better off not raising them. The state was apathetic about it because hey, birth rates are still up. Surely the state can raise all these abandoned kids into loyal Communists and they won't end up dysfunctional and damaged... right? Ceausescu was an actual madman. He went to North Korea, saw how the people there lived, and decided he wanted to do the same in Romania. Imagine the kind of man who thinks that way. How much does a man like that care about childrens' welfare?

@backyard_expert Is Russia actually doing that or are you talking about barrier troops from the Soviet Union?
