Ceausescu visited North Korea - he thought "Juche" was wonderful and Romania could benefit from it (or more accurately, he could benefit from forcing it onto Romanians). Ceausescu was the sort of "Communist" that built himself a palace while the people starved. He got what was coming to him in the end. People like him always do.

@MayaPosch 1990s Russia was only "hopeful" from the naive Western perspective. "Shock therapy", brutal privatization, gang warfare, crippling government corruption... the average life expectancy fell 10 years from the Soviet peak, drug addiction rates soared, women resorted to prostitution to make ends meet. It was Hell, and we did not help by taking advantage of Russia's economic weakness to exploit them - read up on how Harvard economists "advised" Russia on how to "reform" their economy (i.e. shape it to the US's benefit so we could strip valuable natural resources from them with maximal efficiency). The USSR was not a pleasant place to live but the "new Russia" was markedly worse. One of the reasons Putin was genuinely popular in the 00s and early 10s was he managed to restore some kind of normalcy (at the cost of personal and political freedom). Of course, he's since outstayed his welcome. But we could have a better, friendlier Russia today if we treated Russia more fairly in the 90s...

@VladimirPutin-p3t It's been four years since he left power, you can stop thinking about him all the time now. Not that I particularly like Trump either. He's even more of a Z-word than Biden, and Biden's been falling over himself to suck Netanyahu's kosher sausage.

The USSR under Trotsky wouldn't have been much better, it would've been a different kind of bad. Trotsky was obsessed with "world revolution". He would have dragged the USSR into endless wars to spread Soviet Communism. The USSR might have collapsed under the pressure of constant war, the same way Napoleon drove France to ruin.

@thewandererIRL Lenin set up the Cheka, the first Soviet secret police. They tortured people to death in basements on the mere suspicion they might be enemies. Lenin was no saint. Trotsky was obsessed with "world revolution" and wanted to use the Red Army to spread Communism around the world. He would have bankrupted the USSR and killed millions in the name of permanent revolution.
