Just like homelessness in California doesn't cease to be a problem because there is famine in Ethiopia... ...democratic backsliding in the West isn't rendered a non-issue by authoritarian rule in Russia. "Someone else has it worse" doesn't mean you don't have a problem.

  4. If you look at the democratic backsliding that's happened in the USA and Europe since the 90s, there are absolutely real issues. Dismissing them because "it's worse elsewhere" does nobody any good. Off the top of my head; anti-terror laws (PATRIOT), mass state surveillance (PRISM), militarization of the police. Those are not partisan issues. We can all agree those are bad. I could raise more issues but then it gets contentious. Let's just say I don't like governments having the power to define what is offensive or harmful and leave it at that.
