I enjoy Soviet-era jokes because they're full of black comedy about how the state was shit. I bet Russians tell all sorts of darkly comedic jokes about the current regime behind closed doors but no one's stupid enough to say them publicly. Of course there were plenty of Soviet-era jokes that were basically just ethnic bigotry, but they weren't all like that.

@Omniraptorr To be fair, Yeltsin's Russia was not a democracy but it wasn't as dictatorial as today's Putinist Russia either. The stakes are higher now than they were in 1996.

@piratelilac4255 "Jail" is not a very nice word, but the adjective "Russian" makes it so much worse.

@JoaquinTazabi Russia's kinda in the same "don't ask don't tell" place we were in the 50s where some people were obviously gay as hell but maintained the thinnest veneer of straightness so people pretended not to notice I mean did anyone really think Elton John was heterosexual??

@xsc1000 That is what the letter "Z" looks like handwritten in English (with a loop to connect it to other letters).

@dyawr It's the norm in cursive handwriting, but very few people can write proper cursive nowadays. I'm 31 and I still had handwriting lessons in school. My handwriting's serviceable but it isn't beautiful like old cursive is. I get it - there isn't much reason to write cursive nowadays so it doesn't make sense to spend time teaching kids how to do it - but it's still kind of a shame.

Those that aren't get pushed out of the public's view. I mean, whatever you think of Mel Gibson (I admire his guts), when's the last time he put out anything - and when's the last time the public paid attention?

What a lousy party (United Russia, I mean)

@Nystariii Yeah, this is one of those "a plague on both your houses" situations

@Chilling_pal_n01anad91ct That one's very "blue", haha. I guess it's just explaining how Russian society can be, right? Everyone fucks each other.

@Chilling_pal_n01anad91ct I don't understand that one. Best I can do is "everyone gets fucked in Russia".

@Omniraptorr Sure, but does he still live in Russia? If so, balls of steel.

@sarahpalmer411 It's really cool how if you say that a certain group of people have outsized influence in certain industries you get blackballed from those industries. That's how you know it isn't true! It's very interesting that every American politician who wields any kind of influence at all is a Zionist, isn't it? How about you? In light of what Israel is doing right now, it doesn't bother you that almost all of our politicians support them? Benjamin Netanyahu could film himself throwing a child off a building tomorrow and still get a bajillion dollars of military aid from the red white and blue sugar daddy. But uh, no, there's no problem here and anyone that sees an issues with this state of affairs is an evil Anti-Semite ™️.

@jadenjerries2094 Pfp is from an old Swedish propaganda cartoon depicting a chronic masturbator, lmao

@briseboy It's precisely because it's not a normal Russian letter, it's to create a unique "brand".

@starkfaktory6920 Russia always fights as stupid as possible until they're forced by circumstances to get their shit together. They've achieved competence in Ukraine at this point.

@Nystariii It's how I feel about celebrities promoting political candidates too. "Shut up, you got no skin in the game." It doesn't matter who wins the election if you're a billionaire. It's all a game to them, but when you're trying to make rent and put food on the table it's very real. I don't like celebrities pretending they're "just like us". I don't want celebrities getting drafted as a punishment, that's a bad precedent. But I can't feel sorry for them having to deal with consequences like the rest of us have to. I just hate celebrity culture and I wish I lived in a world where we all had to play by the same rules.
