@extremepredudice The action works the same way as a naval gun. Insane.

@BlackHoleSolaire Man, I was born in 1992. I mourn the days when every other forumite had a handle like WeedLordBonerHitler and held incendiary but entirely insincere beliefs. It was more fun than this endless paranoia about "dogwhistles".

@BlackHoleSolaire I'm getting the impression you're the life of the party. Wouldn't kill you to lighten up a little. You don''t have to go looking for a political argument everywhere you go. Oh well, no sense continuing this, I've said all I need to and there's nothing to be gained.

@BlackHoleSolaire We're all a bit quick to jump to conclusions nowadays. The Venn diagram of WW2 enthusiasts and Nazis has a lot of overlap but I have no reason to assume it applies to the fellow I replied to just because he's (presumably) a conservative. You know what they say about the word "assume". I make no claims I unreservedly believe what he says but it's an interesting angle and I wouldn't be surprised if it's at least partially true.

@patrickbateman312 Yeah no you're right. It's a mediocre rifle, but the Brits are stuck with it until they can find the funds to replace it (not until 2030 at least, it looks like). As a service rifle it's acceptable, but in hindsight it absolutely was not worth all the expense and hassle. All that trouble just to end up with the least of the AR-18 derivatives.

@ErwinPommel That's an interesting angle I did not know about, thank you. I guess it's not surprising, that's politics for you. It paints a more nuanced picture than I had before. It's interesting that bullpup rifles have largely been abandoned by European militaries. A longer barrel in the same-sized package is advantageous for 5.56, where high velocity is required for reliable fragmentation. Of course, now it looks like 5.56 might be on the way out too. Wouldn't it be something if this new 6.8mm SIG cartridge became the NATO standard? All that development and we end up right back at a .28 caliber cartridge like the sadly neglected EM-2 was designed to fire.

@ExtraThiccc Power drills have pistol grips. I've never seen one with a shoulder stock but I'm sure they exist. Have you ever seen one?

@patrickbateman312 It's pretty okay now it's been fixed. Too heavy and it can't be fired left-handed but it's reliable, durable and accurate.

@obsidianjane4413 Wasn't the Pedersen rifle observed to be more pleasant to shoot than the Garand? My understanding is Garand's rifle won out because it was cheaper and easier to produce and less finicky about maintenance. And it didn't require lubricated ammo, which was considered to be a supply chain issue.
2
@gloin10 Sure. If I remember right, Pederson's rifle was also far more difficult to convert to .30-06 (not surprising; toggle-lock designs are notoriously finicky). This is again a matter of logistics. The experimental .280 cartridge had some ballistic advantages, but why switch to a new cartridge when you have a huge stockpile of .30-06 sitting in warehouses thanks to Great War production? (It's also kind of funny how many times a .28 caliber rifle cartridge has almost been adopted by major militaries, only to be shelved... and now the US Army is in the process of adopting a .28 caliber rifle.)

You look like IrregularDave's evil twin

@Willy_Tepes Versailles nothing, look at what they did to Hungary!

@hoobsug The real "what the hell" is the H&K G11

I wouldn't imagine you could spot a spent casing being ejected at 800 yards!

@ErwinPommel I seem to recall the MOD spent an awful lot of time loudly insisting the reports that the L85 had serious issues were fake? Pretty embarrassing that it took more than a decade to fix the damn thing. Could've gone much worse than it did if the UK had to fight a full-scale war during that time.

Damn I didn't realise Ian was jacked

@tjroelsma Roller-delayed blowback is a very slick system for pistol-caliber automatics. Compare the MP5 to HK's UMP, which uses simple blowback. The UMP is much bouncier.

Also of potential use to reservists (Territorial Army), militias (Home Guard) etc. The Home Guard were armed with whatever private firearms could be scrounged (typically sporting shotguns) and famously even pikes... ...in an alternate universe where this design goes somewhere, it would qualify as an upgrade!
