@obsidianjane4413 Wasn't the Pedersen rifle observed to be more pleasant to shoot than the Garand? My understanding is Garand's rifle won out because it was cheaper and easier to produce and less finicky about maintenance. And it didn't require lubricated ammo, which was considered to be a supply chain issue.

@gloin10 Sure. If I remember right, Pederson's rifle was also far more difficult to convert to .30-06 (not surprising; toggle-lock designs are notoriously finicky). This is again a matter of logistics. The experimental .280 cartridge had some ballistic advantages, but why switch to a new cartridge when you have a huge stockpile of .30-06 sitting in warehouses thanks to Great War production? (It's also kind of funny how many times a .28 caliber rifle cartridge has almost been adopted by major militaries, only to be shelved... and now the US Army is in the process of adopting a .28 caliber rifle.)
