She looks like I feel whenever I have to speak before a group of strangers.

I think the doctor is uncomfortable speaking publicly and it's compounded when sharing details about the deaths of people. She can generally discuss the nature of the diseases with a little less discomfort. But, when it's brought back to the specific human beings, it touches her on an emotional level. I also specilate that Dr Gerard may find relating personal medical details to the public to be in conflict with her oath and likely distasteful.

Money isn't always the driving issue. May have been a personal choice. Maybe Betsy thought she could handle everything and/or didn't want strangers handling or possibly mishandling her husband or judging them. Seems short-sighted and clearly a big mistake.

@stephanie7572 I guess Betsy loved her husband and wasn't a gold digger with a "point"
7
Generally speaking, traditionally Asian cultures shun or are subjected to shunning when there is a notable affliction. There is an entrenched shame. I don't know that it is still that way. However, Betsy was 65 and may likely be bound in some way to that aspect of culture or fearful that her husband would be ridiculed. It's a complex thing.

Of course his children would say they were close and their father was fine. Their father, stepmom and a precious dog laid dead for days and his children didn't know. That makes his kids look really bad; neglectful and indifferent.
3
The shopping for essentials is exactly what many people would do if they think the flu will knock them out for a couple days. Viruses multiply exponentially. You can be okay, sort of okay, not so okay, then boom ! Overload.
3
They didn't say she died on the 11th. They simply said this is the last date she can be confirmed to be alive.
3
She didn't say "caused" she said "contributed". She was very clear to point out a history of severe heart disease with multiple heart surgeries, a pace maker and advanced Alzheimer's as being contributing causes leading death, which is ultimately heart failure.
2
Just affirming her own statement. She really cannot answer that question and likely anticipates, on some level, her answer will be challenged and scrutinized as a non answer. It also means end of question/answer debate/discussion.
2
Sadly, most of those commenting are ghoulish conspiracy theorists who seem to know nothing about the real world. I'm sorry about your parents.

My step-farher with advanced Lewy Body Dementia fell puttering around in the garage. At the time, he didn't know who I was when I sat with him waiting for the paramedics, or much of the time for about 2 months. He also didn't know who my mom, his wife, was. He died a month later when the disease deteoyed the involuntary muscle part of his brain. Dementia is exponential and horribly aggressive
2
That's what I think. Likely explains all those little short errands getting the essentials figuring she'd be down with the flu for a few days. Also explains the mask.
2
She said she spoke to him in October. She also said her 95 year old father, who had heart surgeries and a pacemaker was doing Pilates. Why on Earth would you believe the daughter? She neglected her father. She pretends he was in great health, a ridiculous statement, to cover her guilt, while justifying her neglect to the public
2
They aren't looking for bruising. They are looking for trauma. Blood pools immediately following death leaving bruising. Furthermore, (this is so hard to say) he'd been dead for a long time with tissue decomposing. Bruising is the least of it
1
Huntavirus causes muscle pain. It seems Betsy was absolutely clueless as to how sick she was
1
Released by whom? Gossips and Conspiracy Theorists?
1
They are waiting for a full report of text messages and other calls that may not be on the device. Sometimes people delete texts or call history to get rid of all the clutter.
1
But the body has stopped reacting; therefore, doesn't show signs of the heart attack. They know what a still living heart looks like following a heart attack looks like. Affected heart tissue begins to die. That process occurs while the person is alive. If dead from a heart attack, all heart tissue dies.
1
I see this
1
What are you talking about? Did you listen to the press conference? Betsy died from huntavirus. Gene died some time after her.
1
I think someone should take a poll of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories. I would nominate this one.
1
Advanced Alzheimer's would stop or impede every action that requires thought process. I don't think you understand this disease at all
1
The conversation between law enforcement and a pharmacist as pertains to a patient is not guaranteed under HIPPA LE needs to file paperwork for that
1
@stevemt3238 Thank you for your medical service. My dad was a doctor, who sadly left us for Heaven many years ago. My mom remarried a dear old man who rapidly declined from Lewy Body. I helped quite a bit, as did my daughter. The exponential decline was horrible. We finally put him in residential care because we could not physically lift him and home care just wasn't enough. He passed away, unable to swallow, which breaks my heart. So, yes. I hate to judge those who cannot defend themselves. But here goes. Betsy was negligent
1
The body goes though noticeable, measureable events immediately following death. Those events are compromised and many eventually erased or indistinguishable overtime.
1
Dogs and cats, don't get sick from huntavirus, either.
1
She didn't observe Hackman as a patient. Most professionals, especially doctors, refuse to convey second hand information.
1
HIPPA regulations are cumbersome. The family must give permission for release of medical information, as next of kin and representatives of the deceased. The pharmacy is under a different set of constraints beholden to general rules with authorized exceptions. That the police would be a party to knowledge doesn't mean the public would be.
1
You are demanding they release lab results and X-rays to you? They don't have to report anything to the public regarding this case. People die of natural causes. When have you ever seen an obituary accompanied with a coroner's report and supporting documents? The never of some people.
1
The Coroner said Gene Hackman tested negative for huntavirus. Betsy tested positive.
1
How many times are you going to copy and paste the beligerent petty nonsense?
1
No dogs can't have the virus. Something prevents the virus from cell multiplying. Many animals are resistive to certain viruses.
1
Signs of a heart attack require a living heart. Depending on the severity of the heart attack, heart tissue is damaged and dies. This happened quickly. Also, the heart ejection rate is reduced. The heart has to be beating to measure that. If the person dies the heart dies, all of the heart. Therefore, all the heart tissue immediately dies and, of course, there would be no ejection rate. So, given Gene's past surgeries and pacemaker, the Coroner can say with some confidence that his heart most likely suffered a fatal event compounded by complications of Alzheimer's.
1
Huntavirus is a rare infection and explains the puzzling tragic death of Betsy.
1
This reminds you of a press conference surrounding a wildfire? And, no, the house was well-maintained. Betsy was an avid gardener and probably disturbed some of this excrement. All it takes is one mistake, sometimes. Forgetful and distracted. I knew a seasoned helicopter pilot, years ago. He flew in Vietnam and then later worked for the Forestry Service. One day, he just stood upright and was clipped by the blades. Betsy probably knew about the virus. I know of it in Arizona, among other dangers with warnings. One evening I forgot and started clearing some bit of twig debris from a monsoon damaged tree in my flower box I didn't have gloves on and fortunately pulled my hand away just as I realized I had disturbed a nest of brown recluses.
1
Heart failure complicated by a very serious heart condition, with a history of surgeries compounded by late-stage Alzheimer's. How did you miss that part?
1
Yes, it showed because you were alive.
1
They didn't all die simultaneously. Did you not listen?
1
They said several weeks for toxicology.
1
@iww6994 You're welcome
1
He didn't say she died on the 11th. He said it is the last day they can confirm she was alive. She may have lived a few days longer; but the last visible activity on her cell phone (They are waiting for the full report from Carrier) activity upon her device opening the gate, and last seen by anyone was the 11th.
1
For God's sake, not everyone is comfortable in front of the press on camera. I would probably pass out. She is also releasing, ordinarily, very private medical information to the public.
1
Except you missed the part where the Coroner is a Doctor not a nurse.
1
Cell phones have been around for a relatively short period of time, particularly in the live span of a 95 year old. That same goes for personal computers and email. There is no reason to assume Gene Hackman had either or if he did ever used them. Landlines and letters would be the communication standard. What is it about the younger generation that thinks the world never existed before them?
1
Her phone history indicates no contact. That history can be deleted here and there, for totally innocent reasons. I often delete calls so I can scroll more quickly to an important number. I also delete thread messages from various unimportant things. The official phone records have all the information.
1
They didn't fix Betsy's death on February 11th. They simply said that is the last day it can be confirmed that she was alive.
1
It's been a week
1
Cell phone data requires a court order and yes, cell phone carriers are very slow to provide the phone history.
1
@jjlogistics4409 As a coroner, she would speak as to findings in a courtroom setting, answering one question establishing manner of death. It's routine and brief.
1
@jjlogistics4409 I suppose if you choose not to see the difference, you won't see the difference.
