Assimilation isn't up to you. It's up to the locals. If they don't accept you as one of them, you can't do anything about it. So no, we shouldn't just shutup. We have legit concerns.

Easy to say as a European. Try being African or Asian. You'll always be reminded that you're not "really" Canadian or whatnot. You'd be fighting an uphill battle that is arguably more hassle than it's worth

As a fellow Somali, I disagree. Yes you should assimilate when you migrate to a new place but it's not completely up to you. It's more so up to the native population. If they accept you, then great. Idk about you, but it's been made very clear to me that no matter how much you try, you'll never be considered 'really British', especially if you're not white. Who wants to feel like an outsider their whole life? So I decided it's best I move back to Somalia and help build the country. But guess what? I'm an ex Muslim and would be much less accepted in Somalia because of it, never mind the danger. So both options aren't great but the treatment is better in the UK so here I stay

Maybe because they are seen as outsiders by the native population. I was all for assimilation and letting go of your roots but I realised how I'll never be seen as 'really' British so I gave up on that fantasy. Better to move back and go where you're celebrated, not where you're tolerated
